One night the Cappo crew should attend.

Give it a look guys.

My cappo always gains a fair bit of attention here.

It always real well organised and all proceeds go to charity.

Mods:
-Adaptronic ECU ft bad tune that struggles to idle, likes to backfire and just generally make noise.
- Blowoff valve = stock, but its held closed at all times so i get the VL type Sutududo,
- Cat back exhaust
- and well... thatd be about it really. Other than my stupid front bar that stands out like a sore thumb hahah

I can do most frfidays, but im too lazy to change my headlight so would prefer day time lol. (not because i cant see but more chance of unwanted attention)

How strict are police with your cars in oz?  What do you mean by defects? Are you not allowed to mod cars?

I'm looking into emigrating from the UK just now and would like to bring my cappo with me but I'm not sure of the process.

Depends on state.

The good thing with the cappa is because its 'cute', you wont have many problems.
The average 'hoon' car here has a 6L V8 or turbo 4L straight six and are target more often than others.

For Victoria:

When a car is to be registered, it needs to obtain a roadworthy certificate (similar to MOT). once registered, no inspections are carried out regularly, it is your responsibility to keep the car safe / meet emissions / ect.

A defect can be issued when you no longer meet the ADR's and general roadworthiness laws... but more commonly than not, it is issued if a police officer suspects that the car might not comply to said laws.

Once issued a minor defect (car too low, tyres poking outside body, headlight bulb blown), you can drive around for 7 days without rectify the issue. After that the vehicle must not be driven. If the vehicle is not repaired and presented to the inspecting body within a month, your registration is cancelled.

If you receive a major defect (no front bumper), you will not be able to drive the car at all and it will need to be towed from the scene.

The bigger issues relating to cars are:
UNmarked police driving around a lot. Treat every new commodore as a police car lol.

Speed cameras are on many many intersections and are deemed accurate within 2km/h.
There are many mobile speed cameras dotted around the place (car parked on side of road, can detect both oncoming and passing traffic)

You can accumulate 12 demerits before your license is suspended.
Caught at:
0-9km/h limit = $180 and 1 demerit
10-25km/h over = $289 and 3 demerits
25-30km/h over = $397, 4 demerits and 1 month mandatory loss of license.
30-35km/h over = $469, 4 demerits and 1 month mandatory loss of license.
35-40km/h over = $541, 6 demerits and 6 months mandatory loss of license.
40-45km/h over = $614, 6 demerits and 6 months mandatory loss of license.
45+km/h over = $722, 8 demerits and 12 months mandatory loss of license.

These arent too unreasonable, but there are many places where the speed limit is quite low. One example is that during roadworks, speed dropped from 80km/h to 40km/h. There was no obstructions on the road, just some bollards on the side... if you are caught at 80 (the previously safe speed) you have lost your license for 6 months. There is no concession for work or anything, you simply cannot drive.

Hooning has been loosely defined as:
deliberately causing the vehicle to skid, smoke or make excessive noise (this includes chirping from the lights)
dangerous driving (includes excessive acceleration... so even if you dont chirp but launch hard youre screwed)
disobeying a police direction to stop
driving in or organizing a speed trial (IE, spirited driving.)

The problem with the hooning offences is that a policeman word is acceptable as evidence in court so if they honestly believe it was you and there is no evidence to the contrary... welll, goodbye driving for a while and even impoundment of your vehicle.

The laws for modifying vehicles is not incredibly strict. Basics are:
No modifications that could *potentially* cause any harm to a pedestrian (fibreglass panels, any spoilers, or sharp edges)
The vehicle must not be louder than 90dB at 75% of redline from 1 meter
The vehicle must be higher than 100mm from the ground at all times
You must meet the emission standards of australia in the year the car was produced.
Removing a Cat from a car that originally had one = ~$10,000 fine

And general safety things like:
Blown headlights
Frayed seatbelts
worn tires
ect.

If you start wanting to drop different engines form different cars or any other more 'serious' modification, you need an engineer to sign off on it for it to be registered, however you can still be defected for it if the police believe it doesnt meet the rules. The fact hte engineer said 'okay' means nothing and you must PROVE that your car meets the requirments. For this priviledge, you will get a nice $300 fine 90% of the time.

So an example of rediculousness... You can get a $300 fine for:
having a steering wheel with exposed metal anywhere.
Not having a shift pattern on/near the gearstick.
tint being too dark
any sort of liquid leak
ect

Combine 3 things on a signel defect notice and the officer will usually get you to undergo a roadworthy check (~$150 now) which is more or less like doing your MOT.

Not on the cappuccino but on another car, i was pulled over for a blown headlight. He noticed the steeringwheel / gearknob issue, fined me $300 and forced me to go get a RWC, MOT.
3 days after receiving thge RWC, i was pulled over for the car being too low, slight oil leak (that wasnt actually there) and the tint. Another $300 fine and RWC/MOT.
2 days after that was cleared, i got pulled over for a noise test (shiny muffler means its loud right?), at which point they noticed that two of my tyres poked out <3mm past the guards.. another $300 fine.

Each time i went to get a RWC, i was advised to make multiple changes to the car.

Point of story, you are permitted to modify the car, but do things even slighlty wrong.... and you will be wasting an incredible amount of time.

On the flipside:
Turbocharging an NA car. Go nuts, BUT you must have an ECU that is locked to a specific configuration/tune so that you can prove that the emissions of the car meet the regulations at ALL times... but unless you are pulled over and a policeman notices something that shouldn't be there... you never have to go for a rwc/emission test ect and you can drive around without any issues.

Way too long of a post for me to re-read and check spelling/grammar/content so yeaaaaaa.

personal import usually works out way too expensive compare to buying same/equivalent car already complied in Aus.

Really appreciate the post and links, gives me something to think about.  It would be Western Australia I would be looking at as that is who is currently recruiting.  They come back to the uk in January so I should have a better idea of what's happening then
