I'm looking at buying new door dampers for my AZ-1. $250 ea. CAD is the quote I've received from two companies. Is there anyone out there who knows of a cheaper way of getting them? Also, as this is a problem with most AZ-1's (doors start to sag), does anyone know if you get all four new ones, will the door open itself when you release the latch or will it need a bit of a push?

That does seem a tad expensive. I'll do some checking around and see what I can come up with.

Sean, I also might have a great solution to our rubber weatherstripping shrinkage issues. I'll keep you updated.

Ross,
Thanks for looking into it for me.
I look forward to what info you have on the weatherstripping.

The doors starting to sag is a common fault with the az-1. They just wear out over time, apparently 3-5 years. The previous owner of my car had the struts rebuilt so it can be done. (I'm guessing by a specialist who re-gasses tailgate struts). Otherwise I believe some mazda dealers can order them in new (as a pair) , but expect a hefty bill. They are also available fairly regularly via yahoo japan for circa 15-20k yen a pair. If you find one side fails before the other, just swap them round and tell your passenger to mind their head

If you get new ones they will still need a push. That said, in summer my doors hardly need any effort to open, however in winter they need more help. If you can develop a fast acting self opening and closing door I would be first to purchase

If the weatherstripping you are referring to is the shrinkage near the front outer top corner of the door, its a common issue too. One method of temporary fix is to use a heatgun to gently re-sit the rubber around the glass, but this doesn't alleviate the problem entirely.

Thanks for the info Brett! I'll do a little research on rebuilding them.

On a side note, I don't think I have seen pictures of your Car yet, and I would love to see it...

A car built here in Canada in the 70s had automatic doors, with the push of a button you could open and close your Gull wing doors It was called the "Bricklin". You should check it out if you've never heard of it before. It was built to compete with the "back to the future" car, the "Delorean".

I'm currently having a new set of door struts made up as a copy from one of my good one - just over £50 each. The downside is that I'm currently struggling with one strut on the passenger side. when they arrive I'll let you know how good they are.

Well I finally got a set of these http://www.gasspringstruts.co.uk/gas-springs-index.aspx?id=4 the 14mm rod, 100mm stroke ones are a near perfect match. The end fittings thay do are the wrong thread (M10x1,5 rather than M10x1.25) but a tap through the mounting holes worked a treat.

Took a while to get the pressure right - they will never lift the door from closed as the pressure increases as the strut extends. If you have them set so they open by themselves when the door is released it would take 2 people to shut the door again. Mine are now set so that once you've opened the door about a foot the strut takes over and lifts the door the rest of the way.

I'll post up some pics when it's not dark outside.

Now that's what I would like to have happen! I feel like a contortionist getting out and holding up the door and putting on my shoes all at the same time! And of course someone is always watching...
