How to bypass the speed limiter (currently 607 views) |

As many of you may know, kei cars in japan are electronically limited to about 140kph.
That makes things a little slow for those with a standard ecu who attend track days, have booked a little dyno time or wish to travel at (non-australian) motorway speeds.
On the az-1 / cara bypassing this limiter is as simple as cutting one wire.
As pictured, (in somewhat blurry fashion) the wire to cut is the solid purple wire that connects via the large yellow ecu plug that goes directly into the factory ecu (not pictured).
Instead of simply cutting the wire I think adding a toggle switch could be the prudent thing to do. |

Do you get a warning light on the AZ-1 when you cut this wire? You do on the Cappo. |

No, the benefits of having a simple dashboard is there is no warning light
All it does is remove the signal from the speedo. My car ran fine like this for 2 1/2 years before I fitted the adaptronic and made this mod somewhat obsolete. I actually have reconnected it so I can get an mvss signal to the new ecu.

Thanks Brett! I have tested this upper speed limit on my car, and was wondering how to bypass it. Quick question: where is that yellow ECU plug located? Under the dash? |

Ahh... its behind the drivers seat, behind a panel near the floor similar to the engine access panel. |

Any idea which one it would be on the Cappo?
Thanks |

Violet with red tracer wire at the ECU. There are plenty of threads about doing this on the Cappo including better ways such as using a 'speedo converter' to reduce the number of pulses that way the engine check light doesn't come on. |

I just performed this simple little operation, and so of course I had to test out the results...
Luckily there are plenty of deserted mirror-smooth roads around here with long, long straights! Seeing as how I easily surpassed the 140km/hr on the speedometer, my question is this: what is the actual top speed of these cars? I'm guessing around 160-170km/hr.
The car was pretty stable, all told. A little floaty, but nothing to make my life flash before my eyes. But I sure wouldn't want to make any high-speed corrections at 150+... |

Not sure how much the gearing on the AZ-1 will lower the top speed but the Cappo will do 217kph/135mph.... |

Holy Schmoly! That is an insane speed for such a tiny car! The AZ-1 is even more claustrophobic than a Cappuccino, so I would imagine going that fast in my car would be akin to a space shuttle re-entry... |

Gearing on the AZ-1 is about 118 at 9500 in top, slightly higher now with my 15 inch wheels but I haven't tried yet. The short steering (2 1/4 turns lock to lock), and the very small trail (there is very little self centering effect) on the AZ-1 does indeed make high speed corrections a bit on the hairy side Just try not to hit any bumps or sneeze! |
