Well after a very procrastinated engine replacement/overhaul I actually got to drive the car for about 100 miles before the gearbox locked up on me. On first inspection it looks like someone forgot to tighten up the drainplug and it's run out of oil, at least one of the bearing has gone in there

does anyone know if it's possible to get the 'box out without removing the engine?

Ohhh man, that really stinks sorry to hear it. I honestly don't know if you can pull the gearbox by itself. I hope its not to terribly bad for you

Don - you're giving me nightmares about driving my car! I don't know if you could pull the transmission out on its own - after spending a lot of time under my car it certainly doesn't look like it, though. Best of luck, and keep us posted!

Sorry to hear about that Don... I've been looking forward to hearing about your new engine

Have a look at this link here: http://az-1.loops.jp/mod/mod_clutch_1.html

or using google translate

http://translate.googleusercon.....jgbnMp3odKQoRp7Xbxcw

There are quite a few pics in the proceeding pages, hopefully they will be of help.

It sure looks like it can be done, but I haven't done it myself. I think it might be easier to drop both out as a whole if you have access to a hoist.

Good luck and let us know how you go, or if you need any help working out what parts are needed etc.

Thank's brett It certainly looks possible, although rather fiddley, I'm going to have a go (not sure I'll ever trust anyone else to do work on the car again). It'll give me a chance to fit the lightened flywheel and LSD that didn't get into the build last time as well.

I'll keep you all posted, and try to remember to take pics as I go

Yep, I too was thinking it would be a great opportunity to fit an lsd . Try not to get any gearbox oil anywhere (or on you), that stuff stinks!

Well after a bit of a delay due to a holiday in Cyprus I got started on this yesterday.

I've managed to get everything out of the way and the box unbolted. The bellhousing has separated from the engine about 20cm but won't pull away any further (there's nothing externally in the way) - anyone any ideas what could be causing this?

Hmm, I haven't had a good look at the az-1 gearbox before, but I know on previous vehicles that the inspection plate can sometimes catch on the flywheel.

I'm assuming driveshafts are disconnected, the gearshift linkages and clutch cable are too...

When you try to move the box any further, does it feel 'springy' or is it hitting against something more solid?

I'll have a look at the manuals tomorrow, maybe I can get a better idea from them...

It's out!!!

Finally figured out what the japanese guys were on about in their thread - you have to unbolt the engine subframe and move the engine sideways about 40cm to get clearance to remove it!

Oh wow that sounds like a bit more work than what it looked like at first glance...

Well at least I'll have another excuse to put a hoist in at my place should I ever need to do it

Now rebuilt, new bearings and 4 burnt gears replaced. I can't praise the guys at Bristol Transmissions enough (http://www.bristoltransmissions.co.uk/) they managed to turn this round in less than 24 hours! - that has to be a record for getting anything done on an AZ-1

Just need to figure out how to get it back in now

24 hours!  That's good for someone who has the parts on the shelf and nothing else going on.  How did they do it?

Bit under £600, didn't think that was too bad, and no, I didn't ask for a fast turnround that's just their standard service.
Would have been £470 for a straight bearing replacement (they keep a full range of timkin bearings on the shelf) but the gears put a bit more on the price - they managed to match them to gears from a jimny!

Got it back in after about 5 hours - just tightening up the bolts and realised I'd missed out the metal plate that fits between the engine and the box. And guess what? - it wont go in with the box in place so back to square one again!
