I ordered a new header from Jworks in Japan:

http://www.i-jworks.com/exmanir.html

It was a bit of an adventure installing it, but in the end it was worth it.

After pulling all the relevant pieces off, I could see how dirty this side of the engine was!

The original manifold was quite seriously cracked, and had been welded in the past. It's too bad that whoever owned the car before me didn't just replace the manifold with a brand new one, instead of trying to weld it. Oh well.

A true test of friendship is asking someone to work on your AZ-1.

It looks as though it is having surgery! Just charging the battery, and piling up parts and tools. I also took off the air conditioning unit at the same time - it was just dead weight, and now the oil filter is "almost" accessible.

Original exhaust gasket that somehow wasn't included in the "complete exhaust gasket kit" from Suzuki. Grrr...

Here is the nice new chrome header all freshly bolted down on the scrubbed-clean engine in my AZ-1. Yay!

Time to hit the road again!

Looks good, I like the polished air outlet pipe too

How many cuts did you get to your wrists from the edge of the access hatch? I covered mine in a thin strip of U section rubber which saved me countless injuries!

Uh huh. That bottom lip is a killer. I covered mine up with an old shirt.

The installation was a little tricky - there was one bolt that I could barely get on, the clearances were so tight. But I did manage to get it in the end.

The difference this header makes in the engine is nothing short of remarkable! I went for a nice long drive today and the car just felt so much better - the engine spun up like nothing, and of course it is a lot quieter now.

I have plenty of "projects" planned for the car this winter. There is a small oil leak I have to source - it looks as though it is from the turbo. I am REALLY hoping I won't have to take that whole assembly apart again. And I plan to paint it as well - I have never liked this colour scheme. In a perfect world, I also would love to put on as many steel braided lines as possible. Oh, and an oil filter relocation kit. Don, you and I both know what a major pain it is to change the oil in these cars. Of course, with the air conditioning unit now gone, things are a little easier. But still...

I also noticed that my front motor mount is on its last legs, so another order to Mazda Japan will be happening anytime day now. I am still trying to source the rear window rubber surround - I managed to get the front windshield weatherstripping, but I am having a devil of a time getting the rear window! Grrr...

Ross, for the oil filter use a cappo oil filter mount, you'll need to extend the cooler lines but the holes to mount one should already be in the block. I've got one here, that I won't be using now, complete with all the fittings if you want it it's yours for the price of the postage. pm me if you're interested.
