The outer (shiny) 1 inch rim of the wheels has sufferred corrosion. Is there a cheap 'n cheerful DIY option for polishing them? I've been quoted  £35 per wheel (min charge) for a professional re-furb, but all the spokes are in excellent condition so I'd rather not go down that route. Advice as always appreciated, thanks, Andrew

35 quid a wheel is a bargain.

I agree £35 a wheel is cheap, I wouldn't bother doing my own if I could get them done for anything like that price. The outer rim is what is known as diamond cut, it's machined on a CNC lathe programmed with the exact wheel profile that takes a very fine cut. The finish is impossible to reproduce any other way.  You could try sanding with a DA and 500 grit disks or using 3M Roloc clean and strip wheels but the finish just isn't the same and it's a lot of effort.

Used to work in a powder coaters' and we were the cheapest around @ £50 a wheel for shot blasting & coating of your choice. My personal favourite is shot blasted & clear coat so you get textured bare metal. Looks so smart!

*SAFETY DISCLAIMER*  This suggestion contains potential bodily harm and/or proprty damage. Own risk and all that.

If you don't have an LSD, you could jack up the back end and with the front wheels chocked, start the car, put in 1st and CAREFULLY rub 1200 grit w&d where you want to polish on the spinning wheel.  Remove and repeat x3

Doesn't that method only work with the lsd fitted? non lsd would just stop turning as the power is dumped into the other wheel.

It turns the wheel "of least resistance". So the wheel you have jacked up spins, and at idle, in 1st or 2nd, at a nice calm pace.  I've actually read on 4wd forum about this "method" being used as a dodgy emergency lathe.

Silverline sell brushes and buffing wheels that polish wheels up to a mirror finish.
