After having a look at a Swift Sport at Glyn Hopkin Watford I thought I'd ask how much for a Cappuccino cambelt and ancillaries service.
They didn't have it on the system and said they'd get back to me, which they did within a couple of hours.
£710:02p
Apparently the quote is valid for a month
(But they were very nice). |

Expensive! When I got my mech to do it I think it was in the region of £300 (labour only, I paid £70 ish for a monster sport belt and about £30 each for pattern part water pump and tensioner)
They aren't too horrendously difficult to do yourself, (from what I've heard!). I probably should have had a go myself but had too much on at the time, and the £300 wasn't too bad. |

I did a cam belt change a few months ago, it was my first ever, and yeah it was less difficult than what I expected.
Definitely not worth 700£. |

Is this an uprated belt? It seems a good idea to fit an upgraded belt if possible. I had a look at the Monstor Sport website but when I clicked on 'buy-it-now' it all switched to Japanese! Is there a UK supplier?

I got my Cam belt and other drive belt changed when I bought my car and I had it up first after we had agreed on the price and I got the old belts with the car. It cant be to difficult to change, it looks straight forward in the repair manual (6A-14) and the belt cant be that expensive. If it would have been expensive I would never got it without extra charge. |

Its not hard at all. A bit fiddly maybe but thats a cappo for you. They chucked a daft price at you because they didn't really want to do it |

only hard part of the change is the loosening THE bolt.. never did cappo belt change before, took me 2 hours to change waterpump the belt, alternator belt and belt for the air con. and all so timing was wrong at first( allways checking before start) so hard to redo it, shaddered the cover too. only thing that took long was to "wash" the cooling system ~40L of cleaning water after that new stuff in. so it is really easy to do |

Thanks very much for the advice and comments which are much appreciated.
I've always been much more skilled in the use of a knife and fork than spanners, which probably accounts for the car's noticeable list to starboard even when I'm not in it.
(Running this through a translator should bring up some interesting permutations on what I'd intended).
Apart from plugs, oil and filter, the extent of my personal involvement in the Cappuccino was cutting the limiter wire and putting it through a switch although it took about two months before I was confident enough to operate it without expecting everything to self-destruct in a ball of flame.
I'm still not totally certain that it won't.
The "dump valve" doesn't really count as it only consists of pulling a hose off and shoving a bung into the bit you pulled it off. Enormous fun though.
I've just had a quote of £295 all done for a 2" stainless cat-back exhaust system.
Cap 2 came with a stainless system which was promptly swapped for cap 1's slightly tired standard exhaust which has now got a bit blowy.
They've said they'll fit the new exhaust to cap1 then refit the old one onto cap2 and only charge me for the fittings.
Have you fitted your exhaust yet Kaappi and how did the weekend of drinking go?
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend and perhaps those of us who live near enough might think about meeting up at the Ace cafe sometime?
I think I might be turning into Judith Chalmers.

I did it myself. There's nothing that special to it. The only think I found was that the cams "relaxed" a fraction when the belt was taken off, so that the timing marks didn't quite align. One went one way and one went the other. Once you've put the new belt on, turn the engine with a socket on the pulley bolt. Wind it back a touch and then forwards so that the belt is under tension when the timing marks align again. Then make sure both pullies line up. It's easy to get one of them one tooth out. |

£700 is just taking your pants down and even £300 labour is a piss take. I think you may have mistaken a barrister's office for a garage It's a two and a half hour job in my workshop that's £87.50! |

You've appealed to my highly-developed Economy gene and I definitely fancy a bit of a Mystery Tour while the weather's nice and I'm still getting alternate earache and silent treatment for buying the Soarer.
Iif you're not at the other end of the country (from Watford) I might come and get it done.
The least I can do is give her something fresh to moan about. |

I've just checked the profile section and East Sussex is well within my "Worthwhile Nice Drive" range.
Shall I order the parts or will you? |
