8:00am last Friday saw me and Cap1 manoeuvring onto a ramp at EMP Power, St Albans to have a cat-back system fitted.

Given that it's already got one, this might seem like a touch of overkill but there's some logic in here somewhere.

Firstly it had recently passed the Mot with "only" 175 quid changing hands, so in the grip of a bout of misplaced optimism I decided to take Cap2 for a looking at while the inspector was still under the influence of whatever it was he'd taken prior to testing Cap1.

Finding the safe place in which I'd put the keys somewhere around Christmas took about as long as you'd expect it to but by mid afternoon I'd assembled my recommissioning kit of jump leads, Eezy-Start and lump hammer (with which to give the calipers their brief but effective annual post lay-up "service").

More in hope than anticipation I slipped the key into the ignition and gently turned it....bloody hell..ignition lights.....surely it's not going to start.....but it did!

Four months of industrial strength neglect and it fired up first go.

It was at this point that it became very apparent that all was not well with the exhaust which was doing more blowing than the Dagenham Girl Pipers.

For those of you who mercifully have no knowledge of these stalwarts of (19)sixties Saturday night TV, consider yourselves blessed.

Anyway, back to the point (such as it is).

Rather than put a new system on a car that will inevitably be sold when my wife finally wears me down, why not put it on Cap1 and it's system on Cap2?

Yay, win win!

So far we're halfway there. Cap1 has an impeccably built exhaust in 2" stainless with a much more direct run and a smaller silencer which the pipe enter in a straight line without any of the bends on the previous system which is now lying on the workshop floor waiting to be fitted to Cap2 on Thursday.

So is it any better?

Oh yes! At idle the note is deeper and smoother but no louder. As you get your foot into the works it has a noticeably more purposeful sound and throttle response is definitely more immediate.

The fact that it will pull a whisker over 7500 in top (rather than its previous 7200 max) may have had more to do with the fact that I forgot to replace the front number plate but I'll try it again with the plate on.

Oh, did I mention that they fitted the exhausts to an assortment of cars in Fast and Furious 6 but mainly the side pipes on the Interceptors?

They also do everything else you might want to your car whatever make it is.

I think I'll invest next month's pension in a decat downpipe instead of the usual Werther's Originals and incontinence pants.

Well that's something to look forward to.

Erm...dunno, haven't done it yet.

Unfortunately some unscrupulous people have discovered that the words "It'll be a lot quicker" have the same effect on my wallet as "Open Sesame" had on all that stuff in Ali Baba.

As a result of this, Cap1's turbo will soon be off to sunny Oxfordshire to be constructively fiddled with by some nice men who know about these things (I don't want to blind you with science) and then EMP Performance will make the appropriately derestricted pipe which will join the newly steroid-stuffed and fire-breathing turbo to their previously installed (and rather lovely) system.

They tell me that it needs to be done this way round so that they can "maximise the flow".
(I'm not an expert on thermodynamics but I think that this almost certainly refers to maximising the flow of money from my bank to theirs).

Having recently had my prostate fiddled with (not the fun you might think, despite the rubber gloves and Vaseline), I offered to share my experiences in relation to flow but they declined on the grounds that it was nearly lunchtime.

Now the cynics among you may wonder if the suggestion to do the turbo first (and elsewhere) may have been based on the possibility that the person who removes it may have to spend considerably longer to accomplish the process than they had initially imagined.

They may also spend quite some time in the local Hire Shop seeking plasma-cutters, lasers and probably dynamite.

A couple of visits to intensive care can't be ruled out either. .

Despite all this I'm feeling remarkably cheery (thank you for asking) as it's my birthday in a few days.

Under normal circumstances this would be a matter of absolutely no consequence whatsoever but this one will be my 69th and that has presented a far better than average "once in a lifetime opportunity" to turn the volume down on my normally assertive and strong-willed wife by frequently reminding her of the connotations of the number 69.

Further helpful suggestions on my part have included that she might find it slightly less tedious if she can manage to get half a bottle of gin and a few Red Bulls down first and a promise that I'll do my best to reduce my excessive chilli consumption.

And pickled onions.
(sorry)

She's now so nervous that I'm shakily confident that I might get away with my present to myself which is a 2 owner, full service history UZZ31 Soarer

Oh Je5u5, I'm going to be in SO much sh1t.

I took my 1st cappo there for an exhaust system, wasn't cheap and welding wasn't perfect but that was over 7 years ago and the system is still good and now currently fitted to my black cappo.

It cost about £550 IIRC for 2" straight pipe from downpipe and with the potato canon backbox sounds pretty cool, without the baffle its nice and boomy and gets a lil more top end power but even with the baffle sounds good and gives me slightly better acceleration.  I've had to get the braided flexi section replaced once due to the good ol London speeds bumps rubbing a hole thru and its been adapted a lil to marry up to my DIY downpipe.

I really like the idea or of a diy downpipe.

It's got such a nice solid, achievable air about it quite unlike, say, a diy vasectomy or a home-made chainsaw.

As you're local perhaps you'd care to join one or two of us (Mikei, Sammy, Mohammad and me so far) at the Ace Cafe somewhere round the end of this month?

Mikei is a particularly handy bloke to know (as well as being very good company ) for a good number of reasons, not the least of which is his ownership of a means to transport cars (I hesitate to use the term "Car-Transporter" for fear of raising your expectations  ).

This vehicle is in almost continuous use moving one or other of Mikei's ever changing collection of deliciously weird and highly covetable cars between the homes of the ever-dwindling number of his mates who have yet to learn the real meaning of "It's just for a couple of days...."

If anyone else wants to join us (and why wouldn't you?), it looks like being either a Saturday or Sunday at the end of May/beginning of June  and it's worth turning up just to watch me getting into a Cappuccino.

It's a lot like trying the get the contents of a sausage back into its skin

As well as that not to be missed event, look on it as an opportunity to meet a couple of people who will almost certainly buy the bits of your Cappuccino that have fallen off.

The slight downside is that you shouldn't rule out the strong possibility of coming home to find your front garden has become home to a couple of mental cars that weren't there when you left.

In the massively unlikely event that a total of ten of us can be arsed, I'll buy the coffee.

Remember, It isn't really a meeting if you don't turn up.

PS. Please excuse the somewhat excessive use of smilies which I didn't realise until I hit "Preview"
Oh sh1t.

That's about the standard quote, be prepared it will change.

You get a choice of back boxes that will be very limited once they remove the old system and realise what actually fits, I obviously opted for one in white carbon which cost about £250 on its own.  I also asked for an additional sleeve joint towards the end of the straight section (before it passes the rear sub frame) this has been a godsend when dealing with diff's and the like and I would advise getting one.  It also gave me the option of tweaking the system afterwards as they have a habit of letting it drop very low as its easier to fit, so with a slight twist I was able to lift the back end up a lil bit more.

General quality can depend hugely on the individual fitter, welds will be good but the length and detail of any bends around the rear diff area will depend on the fitters own pride of work.
