I'm planning on importing a Cappuccino from Japanese auction this year, to the US. I know they rust from the inside out, frequently, so I'm a little (lot) nervous. I probably won't be able to have anyone inspect it in person unless one happens to come across one of the auction houses in my exporter's town, so I'm going to be relying on the auction sheets. I do plan on finding a grade 4 that's as clean as possible and not an obvious rust bucket. A few questions:
1. Does anyone know if auction inspectors check for rust in the areas we know they rust (under carpet, etc) or if they only look at stuff like rocker panels and body damage?
2. How much of a nightmare are the repairs if they do rust? I have basic mechanical ability and a MIG welder but I'm not anywhere near as skilled as a body shop worker. Are the typical problems simple patch fixes or more technical (structural, important areas, etc)?
Japanese imports tend to be pretty rust free it's the UK ones that you tend to be able to hear rusting. The Japanese don't have the tendency to through salt grit around like it's going out of fashion at the mere mention of the temperature dropping so that when the real bad weather comes we have none left... The descriptions at auction tend to be very honest too.
