Did all mine using the web.  For anyone considering new tyres, even if you don't buy from them, I'd recommend it as it shows you so many different tyre makes and tread patterns so you can decide what you like the look of.

Hi, I'm looking to change my tyres, any suggestions? Car came with Cooper Sport 165/65/R14 which seem to easily loose traction. after looking at tyres online and reading forum threads on SCORE I'm considering 185/60/R14 Goodyear Ultragrip 7 - directional winter tyres. Do i need to modify wheel trim to fit 185? One garage thought it would be ok but would appreciate feedback from owners. thanks Eddie  [color=blue][/color]

185s fit perfectly on the standard Cappo 5J wheel and the widest you can go to on the standard rim.  Some people find the steering a little too heavy with 185s but I think the improvement in feel over the 165s is excellent.  They will tramline a little more though but for me the extra grip was worth that.  I've recently gone down to a 175 tyre on the front as I had slight wheel arch liner fowling issues due to having non standard wheels.  These seem very good too. 

Tyre choice is a completely personal thing and will depend on what you want from the tyre.  I wouldn't put a winter tyre on mine as it never gets driven in the winter so mine is fitted with Toyo CF1s.  That said I fitted these to the wife's Escort at it performed brilliantly in the snow last year...

Afternoon Andy

I did some trawling through the message boards last night too and realised most of my questions/concerns had been answered by others, but thank you for taking the time to respond especially as, unbeknown to me, I chose one of the oldest threads 

The Cappo is my main car (though still hanging onto Micra for buying DIY stuff and picking up friends who are taller than 6ft 3), so I need some reliable wheels in lovely english winter - though obviously each surface and weather conditions present different amounts of grip.

Just one query (possibly obvious but still worth asking), if i go for 175 at front (which I probably will bearing in mind your opinion and experiences of others), do they need to be the same type as the rear i.e directional or can they be asymetrical. Also I assume that they need to be the same height as rear ie 60 or can then be 65?

No worries - we don't lynch people for bringing up old threads on here like they do on some forums

I've gone for 175/60/14s for the front.  They are slightly smaller in diameter than the originals by 4.5mm and 12mm smaller than 185/60/14s on the rear.

Personally I prefer the same make of tyre front and back rather than mixing.  If you were to mix you would need to make sure that the rears have more grip than then front or the handling could get very interesting.

oh good, I'm releived to heard that! 

Think it's good to have slightly smaller one at front compared to rear as that's how they are on elise's and old F1 cars.

Wouldn't it be better to have more grip at front than at rear otherwise one would always be understeering rather than onversteering? Having said that I agree that it's best to have the same make of tyre on all four.

ps also thanks for advice in other threads on leaking roof and getting silicone lubricant - i picked some up this afternoon. Now I just need to wait for a continuously dry period

Understeer is far easier to control than oversteer.  Understeer tends to be more gradual giving you time to react whereas oversteer can take you by surprise.

actually that's very true. Driving to work one morning after light rain, i suddenly found myself facing oncoming traffic going around a roundabout - luckily no one hit but i was rather shaken. i later found out that there's an issue with diesel at that spot and the council will be dealing with it in the new year.  I didn't think that I was haring it round the inside corner but I now tiptoe around that bit.

have a good evening - unfortunately I've got to get on with a report that's got to ready for review tomorrow 

ps thanks for help - it's the first time I've been on a discussion board (anywhere on the internet) and based on this experience will do it again

What you want is for the available grip at each corner to match the demanded grip.  If you need more rear end grip then its best to have more rear end grip.  RWD cars are naturally oversteery with the power on so to balance that, you need a touch more rear grip.  If you over do it then you’ll make the car understeery so don’t put radically different tyres on it.  Remember, grip levels can be adjusted with tyre pressure so you could have the same tyres front and rear, just with different pressures.

I must have really bad rear tyres because when it's raining, things get very very interesting

I've just changed my tyres from some generic 155/60R13s to some Advan Neova AD07 165/60R13 and the difference is phenomenal.  Have only just started the real bedding in process but the car feels planted to the road rather than floating just above it.  Going round corners the car actually turns and feels so much more responsive.  The Neovas are highly recommended if you can get them in the UK

I had the same make/size of tyres front and rear on my Sc100, the only problem was the weight distribution was 30/70 front/rear !

On the limit, I'd get turn-in oversteer , but neutral on exit, as it didn't have enough HP to unsettle it.

Nothing like a bit of turn-in oversteer to panic the passengers
