Hi all

Just thought i'd make a note regarding this job, as you may be aware it's rather hard to see all the bolts that hold engine and gearbox together.

The hard ones are the starter motor bolts, an easy way to remember the location of these is "the starter motor is allways late at 10 past 8" and i advise removing these first as they are very hard to remove if you leave these till last.  Including these 2 bolts there is only 6 bolts in total holding the gearbox and engine together and it is quite an easy job to remove the gearbox even if the car is on axle stands.

After doing this job a few times now, i've got it down to 4hrs 2 to remove and 2 to fit a novice should expect to take atleast 3 more hours allowing for tantrums and t brakes

Oh and don't foget the thrust bearing i got the whole box fitted and just about to fit the cable and realised the bearing was still in the box DOH!

Double doh edited as i put alternator not starter LOL.

I have found that if you can get a long extension and reach up around the top side of the box, access is pretty good, and I pulled/refit the last box in 4 total hours....
First time I attempted........it took a loooong time, the plate that sits between gbox and flywheel was playing silly buggers and would not budge, I tore both engine mounts trying to remove it haha

You mean the dust cover?

Surely it would've been easier and cheaper to grind the lil bolts off and drill them out afterwards.

Since my first post i've managed to improve my times, last time i did it i got the box, diff, shafts, complete exhaust including down pipe, coil overs and the turbo off in about 3 & 1/2 hrs all with the car on the ground just using the jack and two stands.

Drop the front subframe with engine and box attached!! That's my plan rather than messing with the hidden bolts and benchpressing the gearbox while lying under the car haha!
