Just remove the pipe from your standard dump valve that recirculates the dumped air back into the system.Plug the end of the pipe and thats it.You'll now find that when the air is dumped it goes to the atmosphere giving the dump sound as it leaves the valve.

I was led to believe that this gives more of a wet fart sound than a dump valve sound.  Have you done this method yourself Trevor?  The disconnecting of the hose that is, not wet farts!

Lol.Yep I do this regular on Starlets for the young guys who don't want to shell out for the aftermarket valve.Did it on my Cappa as soon as I got it home.

Following on from another thread 'Funny Smell' how much oil spray do you get in the engine bay when using this method?

Oil spray.I get none while driving normally but when I give it a good thrashing I get a minimal amount which can't be seen but can be smelt

Does it feed back in before or after the air filter? (Lots of pipes - no manual!)

Well it certainly does work!  Very loud and strong sound.  Just need to find something to plug the hose with now (2cm for those that want to try)  so I can go for a drive and see how it sounds!!!

Old narrow town roads with tall building either side are good also,  Cambridge is excellent for it, the Capp could be considered a perfect car for the place until you hear her coming along with a RRrar, phwish, POP every gear change.

It doesn't matter how many time's you do it or who's looking disaprovingly at ya, you've still gotta give it the grin and make mine a large un.  ;D

There's a nice (albeit very, very short) tunnel about 10 minutes drive from me that I like to blast through occasionally. Drop it into first and floor it, you get to hear the full rev range and a nice pop as you slot it into second. There are very rarely any other cars around either so the sound isn't polluted by other engines ;)

I got the exact same effect when i fitted a stainless steel cone filter.
Its even louder since it echoes through the filter, more of a tssshhh noise ;D
I would still prefer one of those sharp quick sounding dump valves though, more high pitch almost like a whistle!

Personally I much prefer the sound from this mod - can't stand the shrill whistle noise from the HKS etc valves.  Each to their own!

fitted a bov blizt dd valve to my cappa this weekend, they are on e-bay for about £35.00, sound great and looks a lot better than a cork in the end of your hose!

For £35 it won't be a genuine Blitz one, it will be a copy, but as long as it does the job then you can't beat it for that price!

You can - just remove the hose and plug it for free lol  If needs be you can move the hose out of the way so it can't be seen or even remove the hose from it's lower point and cap the pipe where it can't be seen.

I've cable tied my hose to the aircon pipes alongside and, due to the fact I used an old locking wheel nut, it looks like it's some sort of connection point that is meant to be there. Well I think so anyway ;)

Well I've just been having a fiddle with my boost controller as shortening the pipes to it coupled with the new exhaust manifold has made the boost run 1 or 2 PSI higher than before and spotted a cork in the kitchen ;) It fits very tightly with enough stuck out to pull it out should i ever want/need to. It really does sound good, more akin to when you hear the pneumatic brakes on buses and trucks release. A "chshhhhhhh" kind of sound.

Went for a 15 minute spin and can't see any oil residue around the ABV outlet so far. The kids around here seem to love the sound at least (they've probably been watching too many Fast and the Furious films and think it's a Toyota Skyline GR-T or something).

thanks andy, worked out that it was the pipe, sounds cool. only diffrence is that where it has the wider bore it lets all the air out in one go where as a after market dump valve releases it longer.

Hi,

I Have recently bought a lovely little cappo, and have been grinning since i bought it. However i don't think i have grinned as much after doing this little change. It sounds great! and it was free!!! Fantastic. I didn't really get dump vaules before, i thought they sounded naf, but know... Love it, great and free, what more could you ask for.

However i am far from an enginer, but does it effect power, performance and i prosume it isn't damaging????

Many thanks Steve

Steve, the only downside you might notice is a light misting of oil in your engine bay. The air that gets blown out of the valve has a little oil in it from the turbo bearing.

Otherwise it won't do any harm at all :)

All engines use some oil but have to say my Capp uses virtually none.  A standard Capp would divert this oil mist back into the engine.  With a dump to atmosphere valve (including this pipe disconnection method) the amount of oil loss should still be minimal.

You could do it with a couple of solenoids and a T-piece (in fact, a Y-piece would flow better).

Here's a little diagram to A; show you the idea, and B; prove that I work at a design agency.

You would want to get two types of solenoid ideally. One which is open by default, and one which is closed. Then when you flick the switch, current is passed to them both to switch which is opened and closed.

I find it a much more satisfying sound to the likes of HKS etc which sound too high pitched in my opinion, although you can get inserts to change the sound.  For me this method is better by far as it is completely free and can be reveresed in a matter of seconds.

demon-tweeks.co.uk do a dump valve that should do away with the need for any solenoid jiggery pokery. Its called a dual port dump valve and is made by turbosmart. it recirculates(quietly) under normal acceleration and vents to atmosphere(loud) under hard acceleration. mind you its £229.13.

dear all~it seems my cappo is really having big problem.....
I had tried to do this free BOV and I failed.

It did not sing the song even the accel. pedal was on the floor for awhile before I lift my right leg.
Is my turbo not able to produce enough boost? I do not have a boost guage.
Or somewhere between the throttle and the BOV is leaking boost?
Or worst my turbo is already blown?

Moreover, will this be the reason for my poor fuel efficiency?

I think you need to check how much boost you have with a gauge.

I think you should be able to move the wastegate actuator rod by hand, although I've never done it myself.

See the pic of a turbo in the thread below, it is the rod that opens and closes the wastegate, you want to know if it is moving back and forward OK.

No you won't see it moving as you rev the engine, it moves when the boost pressure gets to 0.8-0.9 bar.

You are a bit out the way in the how to section, try posting in the technical section, more people will see it.

Used a old locking wheel nut to plug the hose. Also below is the link to a short video of the sound it gives off, louder than i thought it would be. You can sort of hear it at the beginning of the video.

;D Wow wow wow, the best mod to my cappo so far.  Two gold stars to the person who came up with this idea.

I should have asked you guys at Kei Kars about dumb valves.  I could've enjoyed it on the way home.  (I'm a total convert, you don't get this sort of advice on the "other" site.)

Just one question.  Where does the pipe you bung up connect to?  Where would the normally circulated air go to?

Posted by: Chris S Posted on: Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008, 8:54:57am
Reply: 89

It joins to the aluminium turbo air inlet pipe (just above the intake for the turbo compressor).
That's why it's important to bung the pipe up properly, as otherwise you'll be drawing unfiltered air through the turbo & into your engine.

I should have asked you guys at Kei Kars about dumb valves.  I could've enjoyed it on the way home.

It wouldn't have been the first time I would have done the mod to someone's car at a show :D

Ok! im going to perform this mod when i get home from work, after reading its pretty much just pulling out the dump valve tubing, from the socket, and then corking the tubing up with something?
What is everyone using to cork it up with?
would like sticky masking tape work? I am not sure if i have random bits of cork at home,
It might be a bit of a cop magnet but from what i can see this is totally legal for P platers.

I had a black plastic type wine cork from I think it was Kumala brand of wine.
the black blends in nice.
I have had mine "dumping" for a few months.  No police problems yet.
I don't think I'd risk the tape.  In case the adhesive dried out & fell off.  Leaving the pipe open for crud to get in.
Treat yourself to a bottle tonight & fit in the morning.

It's a good excuse to crack open a bottle :D just remember to save the cork!

wow, i was bored back from work, so the family shared a bottle of wine and i used the cork to plug the pipe!
Its amazing, but for it to be i think really loud and noticeable you need quite a bit of boost happening, the soft pshhh sound when you dont step it it hard sounds kinda cute though.

You shouldn't need that much boost as it should sound loud when just revving the engine.  It is certainly noticeable when driving normally.  A high flow or open air filter will certainly up the volume.

Not being really technically minded Ive seen dump valves on fleebay I wondered what they were, now I know.

Has anyone taken photos of the dump valve in its correct place, etc

Dont want to get one if I can't put it in myself.

Thanks

Depends which sort you get.  Cappo specific ones will come with the correct mount so that it replaces the standard ABV.  Here is the HKS SSQV fitted...

The alternative is a universal type that you would mount in the pipe from the intercooler to intake like Kei's...

Unless there is a particular dump valve you like the sound of I'd stick with the free method and spend the money saved on something else.

Does the small vacuum pipe connect to the dump valve then?.

Posted by: Andy Posted on: Saturday, May 2nd, 2009, 1:05:42pm
Reply: 102

Depends on whether the new dump valve works on positive or negative pressure.  You would either use the original vacuum pipe or a positive feed from somewhere else.

Is it normal you'll smell some burned oil after applying this mod ?
And whats the best method to catch the oil comming from the bypass valve ? (mine does leakes some oil)
What about a piece of cloth and apply it with tie-wrap (or cable tie, zip tie, whatever you call it in the UK) ?

A little oil mist coming out is normal but by the sounds of the amounts you are talking about there is a lot more.  This means it is dripping onto the exhaust causing the burning smell.

A better way to overcome your problem would be to fit a oil catch can so that the oil is taken out of the system before it reaches the bypass valve.

This is where I have mine...

My blow-off valve (K-TakeOff) is for attracting with "pshhh" sound. That is because other vehicles does not see me at all. Xenon lights was bought for same reason. My right front fender was crashed by Lexus, who does not see me at all >:(

You don't really want drips of oil but a mist is usual and to be expected really.

You may want to check it again but rev it a bit more than that.  It needs a good few revs to get it to dump.  Easiest way is to drive rather than rev ;)

Thanks, I've tried it again, same method, and even went up to 8500rpm in second and third  in a long tunnel, but still can't hear a dump, really none. So good suggestions are welcome :)

The green turbo light lights up fine though. Because I am a bit worried that I unplugged the wrong hose I replaced everything in the old position after a 10 mile drive.

You definitely did it right from what I can see in the vid.  From the sound on the vid I would suspect that the ABV is actually stuck open.  If it was stuck shut I'd expect to hear a flutter noise...

Do you have a boost gauge fitted by the way?  If so what is your max boost?  The green light comes on as it passes 0 bar so it isn't a great indicator that things are fine in the turbo department.  Does the car accelerate well?

Hi, it accellerates very well. Should I check for a stuck valve? Is there a link how to do so?

edit ; found some links on this forum

doesn't this blow up your engine?

a long story which makes me believe I need to have the ABV serviced

Fitting a blanking plate won't blow the engine up no.  I was under that impression but it turns out it's not true :D

Id the ABV is broken then it will have to be replaced as I don't believe there are any serviceable parts.  It could be a problem with the hoses or solenoid that operates it though.

You'll need to have a read through the service manual page 6L-7 shows how to test the ABV.

I tried again, but no success. I did notice an increase in turbo lag with the hose disconnected, so put it back together. In case I don't intend to replace the ABV, will an aftermarket BOV do with what I currently have ?

Posted by: Andy Posted on: Sunday, November 27th, 2011, 6:29:22pm
Reply: 129

I'm guessing your ABV is stuck open in which case it needs deleting by fitting a plate or replacing.  You could delete the ABV using a plate and then install a BOV in the hose from intercooler to intake manifold if you want to.

Depending on your choice of BOV it's not too hard to remove the ABV and fit one there...

It sounds like a bodge but with a little adjustment to the spacing of the holes you can use a flange adapter like this to fit a universal BOV. A friend of mine had a lovely sounding Collins hanging around so I used that for my install (see here: http://methinksperchance.net/cars/?p=465 )

Some people prefer to fit aftermarket BOVs nearer the inlet (after the intercooler) which would require you to remove the ABV and blank that opening off - I had some blanking plates made up for that job a while ago and still have one or two hanging around ;D See the thread in the For Sale section if you're interested...

Ah maybe not knackered after all then!  It should connect to the thin pipe that runs along with the two bigger pipes across the front of the cam cover.

Having recently done this (5 mins from start to laughter) I thought it was about time it came to the top again.

The perfect thing for blocking the pipe in a considerably more professional looking way than any of my previous sellotape and Blu-tac "modifications" is the plastic thingy that blanks off what I would refer to as the cigarette lighter socket in my wife's car (she'll never notice).

I've just refitted the blanking thingy with a little wipe of black silicone sealer to make sure it won't admit any air.

I apologise if the forgoing is fat too technical but it's the only way I know how.

Tomorrow I'll stick a bit of pipe on the other side to take any oil mist under the car where it might do a bit of good.

Now all I need is to tweak the boost a teeny bit and life will be perfect.
So how would I go about doing that?  8) :D

I too have recently done this mod using the lid from one of my Diesel 'Only the Brave' aftershave lids. Fits perfectly in the tubing that needs blocking off.
It is hilarious driving my car around town now and in my opinion a HKS doesn't sound £200 better.

Kimono, I am also about to increase my boost a bit and I have just purchased myself a cheap brass ebay manual boost controller.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TURBO-MANUAL-BOOST-CONTROLLER-NOT-A-BLEED-VALVE-/220537042109?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item33590834bd

From what i've read, you can fit one with the standard ECU and recover any lost boost as a result of a weakened actuator spring and age etc.

To increase the boost beyond the 1.13 fuel cut limit you will need either an N1, N2 or standalone ECU such as the adaptronic.

Make sure to fit a boost gauge to ensure you aren't overboosting the engine. Andy recommends the Gizzmo EBS if you wish to go electronic rather than the ball and spring type of boost controller.
