It's time to consider another option for zooming around with the top off.

I have access to a Honda S2000 (15 years old) or a Maxada MX5 (2006) right now, any experience with the common issues you would expect from these cars? Resisting impulses just to buy....

Get the s2000 man, they are great car plus you can't go wrong with Honda they are bulletproof. I don't personally own a s2000 but I do drive my friends s2000 all the time, almost more then he does. Overall the car is fun to drive. I personally never encounter any problems with it and neither has the owner but here are some problems I have heard people having with the first generation  Ap1 s2000
1. Oil consumption
2. noise from the transmission when decelerating
3.  Grinding  when shifting into 2 gear
4. cracked retainers

Thanks for that, scratching the surface of the s2000 there's a little bit more going on. But I'll take your advise when I go look!!!

I always like the s2000 it is a pure driver car the miata is to. But the s2000 engine is what makes it better for me. It is  something you can go out to the mark buy milk and then drive it to the track. If I got the miata I would get an older model and buy one of those v8 engine swaps they sell for it since over here LS engine are cheap and ccommon.

It really comes down to how you drive, S2000's are scary to drive quick in any other than perfect weather conditions, mx5's are much more compliant, also, if you want to modify your car then the MX5 is more cost effective (by a little) than the s2000. Power wise I work at a specialist of tuning the '5 and we regularly get around 170 at the wheels of a mk3 2.0 with a few breathing mods and a remap. There's no common faults worth noting on the MK3 either, faily bullet proof as far as you don't turbo it.

I would think otherwise the  s2000 is one of the best handling car I have ever driven. The mx5 handles great to but the s2000 takes it.  Now as to modify I would think in the long run the s2000 is cheaper. It is a honda everyone makes honda parts and are common to find and replace. But this is just my opinion at the end of the day the only person  that can decide is you.

question is, did you drive a facelift car after the chassis tweaks? The early ones are very twitchy on the edge, hence the tweaks to make the car more driveable/predictable.

Valid point, the S2K is the one i'd buy though, even if I do specialise in 5's......

No my friends car is bone stock when it comes to chassis modification. The only thing he did (actually I had to install it for him) is a cold air intake and new wheels.
