Oulton Park ..... 28th July

Results were mixed...... We got fastest lap and set a new lap record but on about lap 7 Andrew started to get problems with the car in that his straight line top speed was falling off... He was in second then having started second (missed pole by 1/100th) but got overhauled by the guy behind so ended up third..  Not sure what the problem is yet.. Going down this weekend to rip the head off because I suspect he's got a dodgy valve..

It was mixed race with our guys starting 30 secs behind the Sassenach XRs (XR2, XR3 and XR3i)..  Our faster guys caught up the Sassenach back markers within three laps and then of course they all got in the flaming way..... There were lots of complaints about blocking and lack of driver awareness..  Silly buggers thought we were racing them and they didn't seem to understand what blue flags mean  >    But it meant that if you met them at the right point on the track it was fine but if you didn't and they wouldn't let you past then you were stuffed..

Still the weather was good and some of the other racing was really excellent...

The Irish Puntos were there as well... They came up to Knockhill last year ... Great crowd of guys.. Utter nutters on the track with some incredibly close driving..  There were also some Unos there...

Andrew got quite interested in one young lady Uno driver until I asked what she did and she said " well, firstly I'm a mother...." at which point Andrew made an excuse about needing to change his gearbox and did a runner

The Scottish Mini Coopers came down with us.. They raced on their own lucky sods...

Still ....  As Andrew points out... Third was a bummer in terms of championship points but he's still got more wins than Lewis Hamilton and has been on the podium at every race...

Well that was a bizarre weekend if ever there was one..

Andrew got pole by about 3 tenths which was pretty good in the damp condtions so a good start..

But in race one he got hit with a ten second penalty for jump starting. The guy second on the grid did a runner before the lights went out, Andrew saw him go and moved about two feet before stopping again then going when all the lights went out.  Auto reflex...

He ended up second but with the penalty this was turned into seventh....  We're appealing that..

So in race two his main championship rival was on pole...... So we thought "disaster" but then with some true poetic justice the pole sitter broke an axle on the first or second lap and retired - Hooray

Andrew ended up third and taking fastest lap so the gap in the points is now three less than before the weekend started ...

It's going down to the wire now

Here's a small segment of video to enjoy...  The bloke in the red car tried to get Andrew excluded but the stewards threw it out and deemed it a "racing incident"....  Or ...  2 into 1 just doesn't go !!

I'm not suprised they threw it out!  Andrew is clearly well alongside and the guy in red turns across the front of him.

That's some fantastic car control from Andrew there too!!

Of course - he had a great instructor

Seriously though thanks for the compliments guy..... I'll pass them on... He'll be chuffed..

He tells me all his vids are now up on his website..  Apart from that incident at the chicane race 1 is a bit boring but race 2 is fun except that he seemed to getting this engine power problem again about halfway through...  Afficionados will be able to hear the change in engine tone..  We still haven't sorted that mainly cos we're not completely sure what it is..

Forgot to update this.....  The Sept race went OK - sortof... It was appalling weather. Raining like hell and lots of standing water. Cars were going off all over the place and even Andrew had an excursion across the grass..  There was no grip anywhere and the visibility was utter rubbish..  We had a restart in race 2 because of the number of cars off around the circuit.

Anyway we ended up with a second and a third which wasn't too shabby given the conditions.

The video isn't up yet.... We had the TV company camera onboard and they've promised to send us a DVD..

Last race of the season is on Oct 21st..  Andrew is guaranteed second place in the championship but there's a still a good chance he might win... So it's fingers crossed.

Next year we're pretty sure we're going to move up to racing a Mini Cooper in the Scottish Cooper Cup.  http://www.scottishcoopercup.co.uk/

Big difference between these and the old XR2s...  ABS if you want it plus they've got heaters to keep the windows demisted..... One guy even kept his radio in so he could listen to the commentary and work out what was going on !!

However this time we're going to try to get some sponsorship... Racing Mini Coops is a lot more expensive than racing XR2s and the old pension fund needs some relief

Sponsorship? How about Autotechnica? lol  Sadly ClubCappo doesn't have the funds but how cool would that be!  How much does something like that cost anyway?

Great news though and fingers crossed for the championship!

How much does it cost?

The car itself which I've agreed to buy will be about £9k and the budget for a full season is about £10k...

Autotecnica's profit will certainly go towards it but don't anticipate that beginning to happen until maybe middle of next year.  The investment in stock, advertising etc hits it for the first few months.

Sponsorship of £10k is actually quite modest... If you want to run a car in the Clio Cup it will cost about £75k excluding the car which is another £20k or so

I'm not actually so concerned about the championship.. The guy who will probably win it has a lot more experience than Andrew and spends every day driving cos he's a skid pan instructor and an instructor at Knockhill.  Despite that he's effectively only one race win ahead and between Andrew and him there's a huge points gap back to 3rd place.

Thanks Ken.... Yes I'm extremely proud of what he's achieved but we've now got to keep the momentum going.  That ain't easy. Finding sponsorship up here is quite difficult.

I was actually thinking of how much different sponsoring packages would cost rather than the whole lot.  Although obviously finding someone to sponsor the car entirely would be good!

Oh    Oil companies tend not to provide individual sponsorship mores the pity.

Coopers are good fun.. The national championship has two main classes.. One for the "ordinary" Coops which we race up here and one for the Cooper S which we don't race here (yet)..

A guy we know pretty well is racing a Cooper S in the Mini Challenge  http://www.minichallenge.co.uk  .. He's currently leading the S Class championship.

Oh    Sponsorship comes in all shapes and sizes..  Generally speaking you tend to find one main sponsor who might stomp up say £4k or £5k and then lots of smaller ones..  Some provide stuff instead of cash..... Tyres is a good one, or brake disks/pads...  You can eat two front tyres in a weekend and that's £175 and perhaps three sets of disks and four sets of pads in a season.. Bodywork parts are also useful    It would also be nice to have a spare gearbox cos surprisingly mini gearboxes aren't that tough.... The selector fork tends to break and fall into all those expensive looking cogs.. A fork costs about £15 - the cogs cost about £500...

Ffion - Lifting isn't in his vocabulary unless he's liable to go off !

Thanks... and all for the price of a couple of Cappos as well..  well maybe three!!

This one is in generally good nick... low engine hours... equal to about 8k miles.. and a pretty fresh gearbox... It's got a couple of dents on the other side although nothing dramatic that I can't cure with my trusty dent remover .... it's a short length of 4x4 fence post

The white must be quite eyecatching as it is one of the most photographed cars in the gallery by the look of it.

Shows up all the tyre marks though...  I mean the ones caused by other cars

It used to be orange and the interior still is.. Too much hassle to respray the inside so we won't touch that.  The only mods I'm doing is to put in a proper oil pressure gauge, water temp guage, cooling fan override switch and a gear change indicator.

We're also hoping they'll change the regs so we can add an ABS on/off switch.. At the moment u can run with the fuse in or out.. Be nice to have the choice in case the conditions change. There's also an ECU update coming which gives another 10bhp or so...
