Does anyone know how to use photoshop well? i'm trying to make a good design that's not soo pixelated as you get with Paint.

Using paint, heres the before and after:

recreated virtually, it turns out like this:

Basically i'd like to re-do it using Orange/blue and with the Club cappo logos, like the classic Ford GT50 Gulf colours:

So who's a dab-hand with photoshop AND a good teacher??

I'd also like to point out that, YES i do have the permission from FB5K to use their logo

If it's pixelated that'll be because the image and/or the tools you're working with are too small, set wrong, or there's too much compression when saving.

Of course the bigger image size in pixels you work with, the more Ram you'll need, or a LOT of slack space on your C:\ drive (and then preferably a faster one).

Keep it big, keep it pure, but too big and the PC will run too slow.

If using PS then save your work in progress (WIP) file in the native format "*.psd"  (I presume still this?) to retain layers, formatting, etc. When saving or saveas your WIP file make sure you set save options to "uncompressed" to maintain orignal quality - not sure what it is by default? - and save regularly.
Using this format makes it very easy to go back and  make corrections later.
Once eventually finished you can then saveas a more portable file type (maybe using compression resize to reduce file sizes) like "*.JPG".

PS supports layers. Use them and name the layers in the layers menu to make them more easily identifiable later when you want to make changes. Add new elements to new layers.

Image size. If the orignal isn't that big in pixels then resize the entire thing to something larger.
For my poor animations I'll often start with components of 500x500 or 1000x1000 or larger, though 3000x3000 is sometimes heavy going if there's lots going on unless you have a lot of RAM, but then again I can easily amass 20 to 50 layers in my WIP files when animating.

Using larger width tools (eg. lines, airbrush, shapes, etc) will be smoother than smaller ones - this is easier with a larger image.
Try  changing the Shape, step, hardness, density and opacity of the tools as well - experimentation is fun!
Try changing the texture.
With a Wacom Tablet    you should be able to have opacity, colour, width set to vary with pressure of the pen     - even a 8/9year old copy of PSP6 can do this!

For shapes, lines, text, etc., try setting it as a vector instead of a raster tool. Also try antialias on/off.
Try changing the the join/mitre for the corners.

For Flood Fill tools there are even more settings to play with.

For demarque tools (Eg. lasso & selection) try vaying the antialias or feather.

To finish off and remove pixelation, use the Blur or Soften tools - I tend to use Soften mostly as it's more subtle. This works best on areas that are similar, but a little at a time or it gets confussed and doesn't do as good a job.
With PSP6 this often only works well only with everything flattened to one layer, then use the demarque tools to section off small areas that are pixelated. Patience is a virtue for this as selecting too large or varied an area can lead to poorer results.

Eg. smoothing out a line to keep it distinct but blended with its' surroundings you'd draw the demarque along the lines length through it's middle, then enclose a small area to one side and apply the soften tool, then repeat for the other side of the line.

right-o i'll give it another bash lol

how would i apply a colour to the whole canvas though? by default the skins are basically shades of white. i'd like the same but shades of a different colour, say blue for example. so it makes the whole thing a tint of blue?

THat's easy-ish.

Go to the layers palette and create a new layer.
Not sure in PS whether it'll work this as a raster or maybe as a vector layer?
In my old PSP it'd have to be a Raster layer only.

Once done pick a colour a shade or so darker than you need from the colour palette.
Select the new layer in the layer palette and place it at the top.
Select the flood fill tool and set the parameters as you like it (eg. select a patern/texture, etc, if needed) and just fill the layer with the colour.
Now go back to the layer palette and change the layer transparency to make it more erhm transparent (see-through).

Tip:
You can use the magic wand selection tool to select an area on another layer, then change layers and the selected area then acts on the new layer.

Another way that some use is to use tools fro mthe colours menu - not sure in PS?
Colourize, Gamma, Highlight/midtone/shadow, Hue/Sat/Lightness, Hue map, R/G/B.

All of which alter various aspects of the images colour makeup and maybe you can select only one layer to work on, not sure?

add new layer
add colour (flood fill)
change layers transparency
done.
This is best to use when colour isn't in the orignal, or very little of it.

The Capps on here that have been magically colour changed from red to ? , however use the options in post 4, but this is a lot harder and requires a lot of experimentation and works best if there is colour already there.

More to the point, do you have permission from Adobe to use their software? (No need to answer that one, I'll assume you purchased a license)

In my experience, Photoshop's all about learning what a tool does rather than "use X tool to do Y", then it's (usually) easy to figure out how to do whatever you want. So as you go through, pay attention to what each step does to the image and you'll pick it up in no time

Well said, Jaik

Experimentation can be sooo much fun, but also so frustrating if you're unable to quite get the specific result you're after.

PS is a very powerful tool and so as I said to get the most out of it you need 4 things :
-a decent size/quality of image to start with,
-a reasonable PC I suppose with plenty of room?
-plenty of Ram  <-- very important if you're doing more than just very simple stuff or working with larger images like those from modern digital cameras.
-patience <-- something I certainly could do with more of, lol.

Only just spotted this but looks like you got what you needed... 21 layers is nothing - trust me you'll end up more than that in groups sometimes.

So when are you putting in for your Adobe Certified Associate? (assuming you aren't ready for the Adobe Certified Expert exam)
