OK, I really like a 993 GT2. They are such a focused, alive, nimble and very quick thing to drive they are just brilliant, but I can't even nearly think about affording one when they are going for like £300,000+ these days.

I had a go in a customer's 996 GT2 (the later version) a while back, thinking that if I sold some internal organs and everything I own I could stretch to buying one - eventually. Trouble with that idea was, the car was like Usain Bolt with wellies on. Potentially mega-quick but so clumsy and falling over it's own feet it wasn't even like a distant relative of the 993 version. I'd have more fun driving my stock Cappy, and at much safer speeds.

Anyways, a BMW customer of mine recently offered me a 2009 997 GT2 (not as good as the 993 but very much better than the 996) that he got in a deal. I told him I couldn't afford it (which I really can't) but he insisted I took it without paying for it on the understanding that I will when I can. It's tucked away for now until it's paid for and then I'll fetch it out. It's only got 3000 miles on it so I won't be using it as my daily but at least I'll get owning a GT2 out of my system.

It's one of the last ones made (besides the RS models) and it's in Speed Yellow like this one....

Holy crap, a 911 997 GT2 !
Congrats on that !

So if I got it right, you can't use it until you pay for it, and you can't really pay for it (or it is gonna take a good while). Right ?

Must be so freaking frustrating. But also very exciting.

I was contemplating a very cheap & nasty 911 instead of throwing so much useless money at my cappo, I do quite like the idea of them & like them a lot more now than I ever used to; a car made for fun and purpose, not to a price with all the constaints and crap. And minimal electronic crap too, that appeals to me a LOT. You certainly have an impressive reputation to be 'given' a GT2 'until you can pay for it'!!

Well done

Ricou, I CAN use it but won't be doing as an incentive to myself to get it paid for sooner than later.

I don't do credit (I'm old-fashioned like that), the only credit I've got is the mortgage and now this. I've had this customer for many years, he doesn't need the money for anything else but he did want the space that the 997 was occupying and knew I really wanted one. He knows he'll get paid so he's not bothered. I am due a reasonable sized payment fairly soon so that will get the bulk of it squared off.

Doodle, be careful buying a 'cheap' 911, because the truly inexpensive ones to own are the ones that are not cheap to buy. Only the dry-sump engined ones are worth considering, and even then be very careful looking for rust. Don't buy a freshly painted one, but by all means buy one that needs painting because you can see what you are getting. Wet sump 996 and 997 engines are absolutely crap, in too many ways. If buying a 964/993/3.2 Carerra take a very good look for rust at the bottom corners of the front and rear windscreens. Also, nearside rear inner wing/chassis leg at the back, just forward of the rear bumper mounts. Expect them to leak a bit of oil, but leaking a lot of oil is usually the 'though-bolts' on 3.2 C/964. 993s got a revised through-bolt seal design which were much better.

Crikey, that's a pretty 'involved' list. The older air cooled jobbies appeal to me... Though nowhere near enough to warrant spending KGC10 money on one; which is now the only car I'd spend serious money on - as it's the only car I'd love to own purely for the love of the car, rather than its capabilities.

I can in no way afford one as pretty as what you now have though, as much as I'd love one
great basis for an aero-eccentric track toy though
