For the aluminium rear calipers I used a soft wire brush in a battery drill, then cleaned with a degreaser.  For the rest of the caliper parts, I used a hard wire wheel in the grinder which not only cleaned the dirt off, but also the rust.  You really do need something like this to get them back to bare metal, ideal for painting.

Yep I used wire brushes on mine.  Halford's degreaser didn't seem to 'cut' it with the second set though.  They were in a shocking state though

I have used a few different brake bleeding kits and always had trouble with the check valve either sooner or later.
The simplest way is to get a glass bottle and put some brake fluid in it, say about 50mm. Take a clear tube from the brake nipple and immerse the other end in the brake fluid in the bottle. Just bleed away till your done then.
The glass bottle is for a bit of weight which I just sit on the ground and wont fall over.
