These arrived today - I've been after a set for 4 months but 3rd time lucky (and at a reasonable price too - first set I was bidding on went for nearly £200!)

Sorry I realise this is an old post but...where and how can I get a set of these sun shades? My AZ-1 didn't come with em

Hey there Brian,
not sure where fxdlidon got them from, but the biggest auction site in Japan is here
http://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/
They have loads of parts for AZ-1's(I bought my wheels from here, and other bits). I just check and it doesn't look like they have any sunshades atm but I'm sure a pair will make their way on there at some point(I have seen them before).

^ that's where I got mine from. Originally I believe they came in a bag, with fitting instructions printed on the outside, but I've never seen one. An absolute 'must have' for the summer though!

I find that there is absolutely NO headroom when I have mine in. So what I do is just leave the one for the passenger side in. Half the car is covered, better than none, and I can still drive without a permanent crouch.

Well done Brian

Ross you must be a bit taller than me - I'm ok as long as I'm not wearing a crash helmet then they have to go.  Not a problem asI wouldn't drive on track with them anyway as they could drop out!

Thr replacement engine I got from lord is now in and running very sweetly. Think it might take a while to get used to the bite of the Suzuki Sport clutch though - feels a bit like an on-off switch at the mo

Your running the stage 2 on the adpatronic?

I was told they shouldn't be run on anything other than the stock ecu unless done by a tuner, mind you i would take that with a pinch of salt given the hassles i've had with mine.

With an O2 sensor and a well tuned knock sensor, I think someone like Don should be able to get it running well safely

Don, I want more news about your car !
Do you know exactly what was done on this engine ?

Gratz on the stainless exhaust manifold by the way, I see you finally got one.

I'm sure he'll get it purring pretty quickly and the best bit is that once its all done there'll be a good map available for my engine.

If thats the stock stage 2 engine it'll have, fast road cams, lightened flywheel by about 3.5kg, 698cc forged pistons, metal headgasket (probably crux), new seals and gaskets throughout, suzi sport cam belt, new bearings throughout and mildly ported head.

Doesn't have the lightened flywheel, the engine didn't come with one and the one I've got here for it didn't arrive in time. Aside from that I'm fairly sure it's a stock Fairfax stage 2, is that right lord?

Fired up and runs well on my old settings, although I'm sure once I can start revving it the Adaptronic will start making a few changes

Ahahah this is great ! Your AZ-1 is going to be mind-blowing fast with this engine.

What did you do with your forged JE pistons by the way ?

My engine will be pretty much the same, minus the "fast road cams".

Pistons, head gasket, the old engine and a whole load of other bits are still with the bloke that was supposed to be doing the engine work! If this engine works as well as I hope it will then there could be a big parts sale on here shortly - just a shame I never got to use the pistons

I might still get him to build up the bottom end, my engine will need to come out again to fit the lightened flywheel and LSD - still not sure after the cock-ups (and time) it's taken to actually get the car back (see my Help Urgent post in the AZ-1 owners thread)

I've just noticed there's a perfect example of the work done in the pic above - the unwashered bolt holding the outlet pipe onto the turbo was a stainless allen bolt (with washer) last time I fitted it!!!

No, he wont be doing any more work on my car!

Thats nothing compared with some of the bolts used when they last assembled my engine bay, the bolts that didn't come loose and fall out that i encountered when i re did my head gasket last were shocking.

Mind you i've stopped using stainless bolts on the exhaust side as they always snapped when having to remove them at a later date and i remember a convo i had with an engineer years ago regarding  this and he agreed that they weren't the best suited, not sure why though.

This is only my opinion/experiance but...

According to the book exhaust side bolts, when they are going into any kind of iron, should be HT steel, any thing else will tend to sheer when you come to take them out. This is obviously a lie as evidenced by the number of sheered bolts on turbos when they are removed.

A2 stainless is not as strong, but strong enough, and doesn't stick as badly as HT steel, especially when fitted using Coperslip. The only time I've had probs with a stainless bolt is when I forgot to grease it when I put it in - sheered the minute I put a spanner on it.

This is an old debate and will continue to run for years

Ricou - he's a mate and reckoned he knew what he was doing - wrong !!!

Time for a bit of an update. After all the problems I had last year (gearbox and wheel studs, as well as the shoddy mess of a re-build) I've only just got to finish running in the engine.

Turned the boost up yesterday from the 0.5 bar I've being running it in at to just over 1. The result is awesome, first time I put my foot down in anger I wished I'd put on brown trousers first, the accelleration is going to take a bit of getting used to First time I've ever noticed the front end go light wjen pushed.

I still need to eplace the WB 2J1, it hasn't worked since I got the car back, I'm still running a slightly modified version of my old map so I don't want to push it too hard yet. A new 2J9 is on order so, hopefully, I can finally get it all finished and sorted in the next couple of weeks

The combination of the flywheel and the new exhaust manifold seem to have killed off the turbo lag that you normally get with the HT07 - the engine picks up superbly at anything  from 3Krpm upwards

...and the downside - the bite of the SS clutch and the lightened fly wheel make it an absolute pig to drive in slow/stop-start traffic - I don't think I've ever stalled a car so often in my life!!! (even when I was learning)

Well now, with the engine run in, another problem arises - the MAT temp had rocketed! used to stick at around 40 deg. even when pushed but it started getting up into the 70's and killining any power gain that I was getting from the stage 2 and HT07. I think it's a combination of the new engine and the new exhaust manifold (wish I'd lagged lt but it looked nice ) so something needed to be done!

The options for uprated intercoolers for the AZ-1 are a bit limited. ARC made one (v pricey) or get one made. so I decided to go with one of these http://www.votionspeed.com/servlet/the-1044/Barrel-Style-Liquid-to/Detail

Here it is fitted to a home made bracket that uses the mounts for the old intercooler pipework.

My original plan was to mount a small bike rad where theold intercooler used to be but there wasn't the space or the airflow to be practical so I went for a rad (cheepo ebay oil cooler) mounted infront of the existing rads.

Pump lives on the bulkhead behind the driver's seat.

(note to self - must sort out the surface rust before it gets any worse)

From the back you cant actually see a lot, apart from some extra pipework.

From the other side, things are definately a bit different. Air outlet pipe from the turbo is a somewhat modified cappo one (still neeeds a cleanup and polish)- while I was doing it I adde a pipe so I could fit the Blitz BOV I've had lying around for ages.

So did it work???

Yes very much so, after a bit of testing I haven't got the MAT temp to go more than 5 degrees higher than the outside air temp

The downside - extra complexity and weight (about 6 kgs). Probabley not worth it on a cappo, where you can fit a larger intercooler, but on mid/rear engined cars or cars with limited space, definately worth considering.

Have you thought about wrapping up the exhaust manifold ?

Going to see about wrapping the manifold next weekend - it's going to be tricky with it fitted but I don't want to go through all the grief of taking the turbo off

If you do take it off you could get it plasma spayed by these folks;

Won't be cheap though!

quick update
The bad news - there is absolutely no way to wrap the manifold on the car! Worth bearing in mind on the cappo where you have even less access than me.
And the good - even after a hard run, then leaving the car idling for 10 mins, the MAT only rose to 34 deg (ambient temp 21) so heat soak doesnt seem to be a problem.
The biggest problem is getting the boost control set up properly. The lower MAT and the increased exhaust flow from the manifold means it keeps on over-boosting!

^ I've got the boost control set up on the Adaptronic to try snd give me a nice boost curve going up to 1.25 bar. It used to work fine but now it cant keep the pressure down so the boost is going up to 1.45 and hitting the 'boost cut' (which briefly kills the ignition). I think I'm going to need to turn the wastegate pressure down a bit to allow the adaptronic to regain control.

Given that wrapping the exhaust failed I thought I'd try a small heat shield on the air outlet pipe. Helps a bit but I think the only real solution is going to be, like Andy sudgested, ceramic coating.
