We have been nosing around and looking for historical post either from Dave Benson or about M70CAP. It appears that the 50s we have on are the same ones Dave drove around on.
We didnt experience the noise when we drove it back from the garage (25 miles) it was only a day later after we had been for a little pootle (3 miles) that the noise started. After Teresa wheel span on a wet road pulling out of an uphill junction with 2s up

Just guessing here but its already been mentioned that the brakes could be a little seized is it possible that the shocks or springs arent working properly and this is reducing the amount of room in the arches - if so how do we know or check?

If the tyres are that old it's a good job you are looking at replacing them

You can get tests done to see if the shocks are operating correctly.  Basically the car is put on a computerised machine which bounces each corner in turn and can tell if they are operating correctly.

You can check if they're totally knackered by pushing down on one corner of the car. If it moves down then up the shock absorber's ok. If the car bounces up and down then it's knackered.

Only a very simple test of course but it's easy to do

If the car has been of the road a number of years maybe the tyres have flat spotted. The rear brakes would be a favorite the slide pins may need cleaning and re lubing with red rubber grease. check the inside face of the rear discs ( you can get your finger in just behind the rear calipers) it may have picked up rust from the discs and lodged in the pads.  Toyo proxes 195/45r15 T1R suit the car well and i have noticed no difference in the road noise over the standard wheels and tyres about fifty pounds a corner.

I did ask about the tyres at the dealer - apparently the car was not stored on its feet both garage and tyre place say the wheels and tyres are ok just too big - however there are are a number of things that arent tying back - there has been some welding just infront of the rear wheels that is substandard (according to a local garage) the wipers just didnt have any rubber on them yet it passed an MOT in May.

Looks like I am taking to to Quickfit on Saturday and let them have a look - failing that I'm going to take the wheels off and look at the rear calipers. Might even clean them up!

And last resort - I'm going to loose some weight... It could just be me...!!!

It doesn't matter if it was stored on it's wheels or not tyres that are 5 years old or more NEED to be replaced.

I don't agree with you there Andy - it's up to personal preference how old tryes need to be before replacing them.

Continental recommend 10 years - if it's kept in the dark, then they may well last longer than that.

You're looking for cracking or crazing in the rubber - if you see it, it's time to think about changing the tyres.

Only going off personal experience and professional opinion (and I'm not talking about the guy at the local quick fit ) that I have received.

Don't foget these tyres haven't been used for 5 years and will be older than that.  It is not just the sidewall that can cause problems but the tread itself which can become uneven and 'delaminate'.

Yep, I'd get rid.
Quick sharpish.

Personally I would NEVER take the Capp to a the Quick F'-k Sh#ters to get tyres     unless there really was absolutely no other choice.

Make sure where ever you go that you make sure BEFORE they do the job that they WILL put the weights  the INSIDE  (& removing any old ones on the ouside) NOT putting any on the outside as this makes a BIG mess of your alloys.
Don't take any b-s about "they don't make them" - this is just an excuse for being lazy and incompetant.

As for the discs they look no worse than mine, but then again you've got much more power, so lets see what the experts say.

tyres look old and hard - replace as soon as you can (if driving regulary), There isn't enough clearance between the rear guard and the tyre ( I had same problem!), Smaller/lower profile tyres may cure it but The wheels you have are probably wider than standard wheels which might be more of an issue.

Sneaza on here put me onto suspension adjusters on ebay ($60 AUD) and they cured all my issues - they are basically two bolts and nuts with a folded steel bracket in between the nuts - Undo or tighten the nuts when put in between your springs to alter ride height - only need to take the wheel off to install them!

I would get them after getting new tyres if problem is still around

I do agree that those tyres could do with changing, but due to the condition, not the age (sorry - it just winds me up that people automatically think old=bad & throw things away - properly stored tyres will be good for much longer than 5 years.)

I had 195/45R15 on one of mine (the one that Bainsey36 has done a great job of making fast ), they fitted pretty well, only caught slightly on the front wheel arch liners. Should be able to get Yokohama's or Toyos for under £50 a corner.

I agree - age means nothing - I also have a 1966 Sunbeam - cant remember the last time I bought a tyre - got to be over 6 years ago - mind you I dont drive fast and dont go far - lucky to get a couple of thousand between MOTs.

We are going tyre shopping on Sat - and not at quickfit - Now we know the tyres we need shouldnt be an issue we will try the 45s

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and if you are happy with that that's fine by me.  Tyres that have been in use probably will be ok but as we knew the car hadn't been used for 5 years and the tyres were older than that I certainly wouldn't be risking it.  If you had been the owner of the car all that time then you would know exactly what the state of play with the tyres is and therefore can make an informed decision.  Too many unknows here for me and on that basis, even without seeing them, I'd still have said replace them, which I did.

You're right to be wary

As long as people take the time to understand the reasons behind things and make their own decisions, instead of blindly following whatever biased party happens to be giving advice at that time, that's absolutely fine by me
