Well I bought this car a few months back from Bob-g on here.  I have been after one for a while do I finally decided to go for this and do a full restore or as much as I could.

How it was when I bought it:

So, I got the cappo home, started to strip it down, and to my horror there was more holes under the car than than you can imagine. Anyway, I had to start some where, so started to clean it up for the welding work.

I got some rear quarters off a good friend who had a spare shell.  I drilled through the spot welds used cutter to carefully take of the quarters.  Took my car in to the welders  and it was ready for a major operation:

So after the rear quarters were on, I decided to get all the underneath done.  I was shocked how much this little car had rotted away.  I also had the sills replaced as they were weak. (not got any pics of this).

Got the car back home, and gave it another good clean. It was full of so much grass/hay underneath and in the engine bay it was disgusting.

Any way servicing/tuning and upgrading parts was to come at a later.
I dropped it off to the body shop last week for a full respray in Pearl Granada Black. He started preparing one side and so far has done the following:

It's not going to be on the road for another month or so at least as when I get it back from the body shop, its going to get a major service.
Diff fluid change (castrol)
Gear box oil change (motul)
mineral engine oil first (car was parked for over a year) followed by Motul 5w40 semi syn oil.
NGK Iridium plugs
K&N panel filter
boost gauge and boost controller
Cusco front brace
Dixcell Carbon front discs and Dixcell pads
Datsun 280Z Deep dish wheels wrapped in Eagle f1s
custom front lip
Custom exhaust mated to a Suzuki GSXR race muffler

My other ride is an Honda Integra R with a forged high compression (9400RPM) engine rebuild:

To be continued......

Were the blue rear quarters off one of Bob_g's cars too?!  Good work re-using the rear quaters, it's a proper pain to get panels like that off so they're reuseable.

Yes they were.  I just drilled through the original spot welds and pulled it apart, was not a hard job to be honest, you just need a good drill bit and use oil on the tip of the drill bit as it reduces the heat caused by friction.  I just used some old engine oil.
Plus it makes the drill bit last longer lol.

It started first time after being laid up in a back garden in Gloucester for two years +.

The owner who had it during that time said that it was only taken off the road due to MOT failure on rust, and that mechanically it was sound.

No guarantee of course but that might put your mind at ease a little

Well I drove it to and from the garage and does seem ok, apart from what I thought was a little whine from the gearbox/diff. May be it was some trim catching something... but once it out, it will get a major service so fingers crossed it should be ok.

A little update.  The other side of the cappo has been started. The rear quarters filled and the rubbing down process has started. The bottom bit of the cappo is going to a some special rubber type paint to give it extra protection.
Excuse the pictures, was a bit late before I started to take them.

This was stuff used to prep the bottom bit:

The other side was re done to get a smoother finish, but still needs finishing:

Hopefully in a weeks time it should be fully resprayed and ready to rumble.  Just need to pick the exhaust from Yorkie (Stuart) as soon as he takes it off his cappo.

Wheels test fitted:

The front tyres seem to be catching at the rear when on full lock.  It catches the inner arch.... anyone know of a simple fix? Tyre size is 185/60/14

Simple Fix.........Where it is catching  on Plastic Liner will wear out soon enough, remove Liner and with a Ball Pein Hammer, where it was rubbing, give the Firewall a couple of hits...softly, just enough to 'indent' it, re-attach Liner, jobs done....worked with mine and I've got 17's....that's the only place it touched...on LHS.....

Further update:

Getting ready for some paint:

And some fresh gun metal grey/black pearl finish:

The rear black trim has also been resprayed same colour as the roof (no pics)

I had to put a space on the front passenger temporarily to manoeuvre the car around, as the tyre kept rubbing on the inner arch at the rear:

Thanks guys.

The wheels will be refurbished, the floor pan was rebuilt.  Its now getting a full under seal, every single component that is visible. I know I could/should have done it before the repsray, but I have access to a ramp and I wanted to take my time doing it.

Mud gaurds.... I really do want some.  But need to find some first lol..  There is no more rust on the car wooo hoooo.
The paint looks really good, im happy with thye result so far, its come a long way from what it was....

I was pretty lucky in the sense I kind of knew the people so I got the welding and body work done at a reduced rate.
However the welding guy was a bit messy to be honest considering he said he at 15+ years of experience, but I guess he try to bite off more than what he could chew as when he looked at the car to give me an estimate he did not consider how extensive and time consuming it was going to be even though I gave him a total break down.

The body shop guy was good, totally dedicated himself to this as he himself wanted it to look good as it would boost his business.

But yeah, if you take it to a place that where you do not know them then you would be looking close to £2k.  I got it done for less than half that. so well chuffed.

It is complete, did a change of the major fluids, apart from the gear box oil.  The nut that you open to drain is all messed up.  Its the one that has the ratchet fitment.

On the good side it flew through the MOT, no advisories, even the emissions were very very good.

The diff is a bit whiny, I changed the fluid but has not helped much.  Well, when I say I changed the fluid, nothing was even in the diff lol, not a drop of oil, thus the whine.

I had to change the tyres to 185 50 14 as the were rubbing both at the front and rear.  Ordered my HID bulb as I already have the ballast kit.

Tomorrow it is getting a good wash and buff. I am going to get the roof and rear trim re done again as the colour is not to my liking, the guy did it too light of a gun metal grey.

It seems to be driving ok, but I am going to change all the vacuum pipes, plus get a boost controller.

Does anyone know where I can get a flange for a Blitz style dump valve?

More pics to come.

Thanks

slight update, changed the wheels on the Cappo, these are very light almost weigh the same as the standard rims.  The ones I had on were steel rims so weighed almost double.
Plus I have had the roof re done in gun metal grey, fitted a HID kit, led side light bulbs, electronic boot release, Dixcel front discs and pads, EBC rear pads.  I have bought a roll bar which I am going to have made to fit for the cappuccino (came off a Merc SLK lol).

Quick snaps:

I also have a set of rear MK2 MX5 rear mud guards from my last car, I test fitted one and its a perfect fit, it actually looks like an OEM Cappo fitment.  So will be getting them on soon.  Plus just got my boost controller through and SARD boost gauge, so will be gaining a little more kick from this bad boy.

I have done a bit more work on the cappo.  Fitted the Tein springs, done a bit of carbon wrapping, and changed the colour of the wheels.

A coupled of pics of my friends cappo which is being restored at the moment.

Thanks, the mags are going to get done again, these were painted as a trial run.  The carbon wrapping is done on the glass trim on the doors, you cannot see it in the pics, I am going to do the roof, rear trim piece and will put up details pics very soon.

I agree, silver was not really to my liking too, I tried on a few different sets but then decided to do the mags in black.

I must say handling has improved after lowering it. Also with the extra bit of boost it is more fun.
I had to change the rear caliper as it was bust, I only replaced the rear pads and disks about 2 months ago, had to get another set of pads.
At least now the car moves so much more like it should, that dodgy caliper was hindering the performance and fuel economy.
