Decided to do a few mods on the cappo, bodywork will be subtle, handling mods less so, thought I'd get this thread going so I have somewhere to post the progress, whilst waiting for water pump and cambelt to arrive, thought I'd get the ball rolling with a front turret brace... |

guess its time to start on the bodywork, the previous owner really botched the rear arches to get the wheels... |

after a bit of messing around with card, I can start to see the shape I'm after, quite subtle like my cappo's had a few too many pies, its always best to mock up in card before you even look at a sheet of metal, if this was an American hot rod show I'd mix up a bucket of filler and start slapping it on, my panels are going to be 0.8 mm steel shaped and then the panel underneath will removed.... |

The front arches are actually a bit easier as they bolt on, by spacing out the front, the ali section and back of the arch leaves just the top portion needing to be shaped, although I'll probably take the join further back to get a smoother transition... |

another view of my chubby rear arch, will be a while before I post anything on the arches for obvious reasons, will also be dealing with the rusty sills at the same time.... |

You should really use an external hosting website for your pictures, so we can enjoy them at a decent size
You can use http://imageshack.us/ for example but there are a lot of other websites.
Good luck with your body work ! |

managed to start on the bodywork, since the car is fitted with 195 tyres, the cappo's about 1'' too narrow and looks like this...... |

so after removing the front wing and putting it through the english wheel its starting to get the subtle shape I'm after, rather than fit screw on arches, it now looks like this.... |

just started on the rear arch, once I'm happy with the shape I will cut the original wing off leaving a one inch overlap and weld the new one in place, pictures show a bit more shaping and trimming needed but its not a million miles off... |

not entirely happy with the right side, decided to have a look at the left, with card you can see the subtlety of the curves involved, taking a little more time on the card template which will incur a lot less time on the steel, will also tell you what the steel wants to do whilst forming... |

from the card template transferred to the steel and wheeled the shape is coming, I'm going to have to make the wing in three pieces, the arch area, body line and sill, this way I can fade the body line out to the arch, much happier with this side, so replicated the right side at the same time, making them near mirrored...... |

I've had a mad 'cap' idea, living in HKG the weather is pretty good and will only drive the garaged car in the sunshine so I intend to remove the rear glass and 'roll bar' and plastic bits behind seats and style a grp box which will give loads more storage space and make a tounneau cover for the cockpit, what do you reckon? |

It sounds like it would work but without a roof, you would be unable to lock the car. (you could just lean in and unlock it from the inside. You might not be able to park it anywhere outside. |

I Know this sounds a bit optimistic, but Hong Kong is super safe with very little petty crime, the crooks over here tend to go for the big stuff, that said, it might be worth having a removable steering wheel, pedal lock? Besides, the car will be a Sunday driver |

Very impressed with your bodywork....
Have you given thought to making the rear arches formed as a section through a cone ? You can make flat sheet look like a pressed curved panel with a little work through rollers. Obviously, an English Wheel stretches (and adds stresses of course) the metal in a manner that is very difficult to replicate perfectly for both sides.
If you can get the shape you desire with card you can get the same from flat steel sheet with some careful, and not very difficult, work.
I made a very simple but effective way of making the pattern for my front arches using a steel tube hoop rolled to the radius I wanted for my arch and marked it off at 1 inch intervals. I then pulled a piece of string out from the wheel centre to an axle stand some distance away with the string perpendicular to my arch radius. Then, using a laser pen, I aligned the points on the hoop, each in turn, with the tangent of the curve on the original panel and marked where this line intersected the string. I then measured the distance from the string to the hoop and then on to the point of contact on the tangent of the original wing. Then, on the back of some linoleum flooring (which is white, flexible enough to shape, and is available in big enough pieces to do the job) I made the pattern for the sheet to be cut and it worked really well, first time of trying.
If you like the idea but don't follow the above I could do some drawings, it's easy enough really.
You need:-
1: A metal hoop of tube rolled into the radius you want for the arch. 2: A laser pen 3: Some white string that you can mark with a marker pen 4: Two marker pens in different colours. 5: An axle stand or similarly heavy item. 6: A strip of linoleum flooring big enough for the whole pattern, or a piece a bit bigger than your wing and a roll of flat wall paper to make a 'T' shape. 7: Since your car is a dark colour, a scribe would probably be a good idea to mark where your arch edge will meet the original panel.

I think 0.8mm sheet will be much too thick to make a nice joint with the parent metal, which is about 0.45mm thick from memory. |

thanks Wayne for your advice, but the curve still needs to be compound, I have a mangle to roll one direction which gives a head start, but still need the other 'directions' to really get the shape, been looking at Boxsters and Astons you'll know what I mean, rather simple looking but quite complex compounds, still got a sh*t load of rusty sills to contend with before putting full attention on the styling Been difficult in HKG to source thin steel sheet, the Japanese galv stuff is ok, but I'm sure due to the galving process it hardens the metal somewhat, I plan to remove the inside metal leaving an overlap and spot or plug welding, trying to minimize distortion and amount of bog Attached a pic of my CR250 cafe, I made in ali..... |
