Morning, thought i best start a thread on my Cappo

Wanted one since i saw one about 14 years ago.  Could never afford one, still cant, hence buying a rusty example.

Here she is, sat for 4 years

Stripdown and start work

All told very happy with the condition of her, soon have some fresh steel let in, painted up, mot'd and then the fun shall begin...

Plans are to let in some good steel, mot and drive.

Then the modifying can begin, i want her lowered onto a set of matt black banded steels with nato green bodywork.  Some tuning wouldn't go amiss, but it'll all be on a budget...

Grabbed an hour tonight so did a little...

Cleaned up the area a touch, waiting for my rust neutraliser to arrive from Bilt-Hamer so I can start welding.

Bit more rust

I suggest everyone gets one of these, Evolution Cyclone swarf collector.  Picks up all the crap that gets everywhere...

First little plate made up, first of many the way this cars going!

Oh, lastly, she's not moved in 4 years, a few checks, a charged battery and she fired straight up!  Bit lumpy on the old fuel, but she runs

That is all...

Slowly, so very very slowly...

I'm mostly working on doing up my house, so thats taken priority.  Though, i've done a little work today and decided a full stripdown is in order, there's some rust on the chassis member at the back that requires the subframe to come off so I figure I might as well strip her right back, do the work properly and hit her with a nice full respray.

No pics though sorry, just imagine the rustiest Cappo you can think of, then multiply it by ten, and its a little worse than that ;p

wow  its sounds bad but just think of all the hard work and how this will pay off.

You're in the same boat as me. I brought a slightly rusty example and ended up doing a full rebuild.

Update!

Started with a bit of this

Then this came off

Then this happened for a good month or so

So that was my first lul in progress, but inbetween downfalls, i took some pics of this

Fun!

It was at thsi point i decided that patching her up wasn't an option and my best bet would be a strip down, get her on her side and do some proper welding.

Best get the engine out then, by myself, with no engine crane!  Easy!

Strip her down a bit

Lift the front, support the subframe on stands

Undo the subframe mounts (yes i'd done the gearbox mounts and misc wiring first), then drop shell back to floor, finally undo the shock top mounts, jack the shell up, boooooom, engines out complete with subframe so i can easily wheel it around

Maybe next time i'll drain the fluids, gearbox oil stinks!

Stored in the garage

Dropped onto dollies so i can wheel her around

Oh, 'cause the passenger side floor wasn't to bad i fixed it

Nice work ! So, what are you going to do about the shell ?

By the way, it seems I have the same axle stands, and one broke down so I wouldn't recommend them.

The shell will be rolled onto it side and welded, i'd really struggle to try and weld this lot up with it on stands.  Plus it means i can clear up the underside and give it a good paint and undersealing!

The little red ones?  They are shocking!

Bit of steel arrives tomorrow so i can knock this up

Was looking into making a car rotisserie, but after crawling about underneath the Cappo, the subframe mounts are a perfect place to mount a simple frame like this on, then its just a case of using the engine crane to tilt her onto her side for some epic welding!

I collected my bits from Milton Keans two weeks ago and he had a full roll over cradle and it was class!! He used scaffolding! You could weld the car from any angle...

Hold on!

Anton his name is. He should be updating his thread soon enough. His cappo should be class when finished!

Hi there
Great job you are dooing, and impressing to see you working with the car and making it alive again.
My car(a '95 silver cappo) had some rust in the same plases, so it must be a general problem of the cappo.
Good luck with tha car

Next time I knock up a bespoke, rudimentary frame to tip a car on its side remind me to build in some sort of caster system.

I really needed to get the car closer to the garage and behind the gates away from folks eyes, cause for some reason a mid nighties jap on its side seemed to cause traffic issues.

Easier said than done, out came the crane again and the only things i've got with wheels that can take the weight, dollies.  Getting the frame on the dollies was easy enough, the problerm lay in my pikeyness and using old steel, the funny angles didn't help.

Gaffa tape!!!

Didn't work to well.  But I managed it eitherway, safe and sound now...

Are you fabricating whole new pans then?

Someone was asking for dimensions/patterns for them on the Facebook group today so if you happen to take some measurements and drawings...

Yeah I am Andy, and if it turns out decent i'll be happy to make more to help everyone here out who doesn't want to pay 300 for what is essentially a tenners worth of steel.

They wont be pattern parts, mind, but just as strong and easy to fit...

Are you going to make it a flat sheet with a bead along the edges or are you going to swage it down the middle too?

It'll most likely be ribbed along its length with one or two across its width, not really sure till I get the steel, the roller and some time.  I'll probably have it flat with the floor edges instead of dropping it the inch or so like the original as I dont own a 4 foot long folder

With the engine, gearbox and subframe out, do you think you would be able to "wheelbarrow" the rest of the car around?

Easily.  I did it (with the help of two others) with all that still in when getting rid of my silver shell

Not really an update, but I just had to say my bead rollers arrived!

Now this was cheap in the scheme of things, rollers seem to be around £600+, this one wasn't, for a reason:

Tried it straight away, damn the deflection was massive, almost an inch at times.  The jaws just flayed apart as soon as pressure was applied, that wouldn't do, the beads were awful.

Out came the welder and some scrap steel.  8mm x 40mm angle iron should do it, with a little bit of box to tie it together.

Mounted

Here is the test beads, now its, my first time, by myself (its really a 2 man job till I get a wheel instead of a handle)

The outer is before I strengthened it, you can see how bad it is, especially in the corners, the inner is with the work done, nice crisp bead, happy?  Damn straight I am...

So your going into jelly moulds now

Seriously though, i presume that tool is for making some nice and strong floor pans, you've got yourself a nice lil market now, you'll be inundated with floor pan requests.

Just thinking you could make a nice lil touch by pressing simple wording into a panel.  Not many would see it but i'm sure it'll make the MOT guy chuckle if everytime he sticks it up on the ramp it had "Cappuccino 1993, Corgi" or something similar on one of the panels
