Nightime shots?

Is it a digital camera?
If so it's probably got some presets like "nightime" (no I'm NOT being sarcy!) or "fireworks" or "Sunset" or "Natural" that might work better?
Go on, have a play!

Ok capgun heres your close ups. I had to wait for some daylight, been getting home a bit late from work this wek.
304 grade 16 gauge stainless steel mesh with each light having 12 blue white/white blue(whatever) led's. Lights are from Repco auto parts. Looked for about 2 weeks to find something I thought was suitable.
If you use stainless steel mesh dont get 316 grade as it can basically only be cut with a friction disc and is too dificult to work or put small holes in for screws/bolts. Sheetmetal shops wont even cut it in there guillotine.
Left side no flsah.

Perforated metal. Be carefull on any air intakes as it doesnt have a very big free area compared to mesh or expanded metal even though it looks like it.

I see what you mean :) Must create more turbulence as it enters the pipe/duct. It was from a sidestep from a 4wd (about 2mm thick stainless).

Are you going to have an airflow meter on your capp somewhere (Is that affilated with your line of work?)

Posted by: grant4561 Posted on: Saturday, March 8th, 2008, 10:57:01am
Reply: 22

My line of work encompasses pretty well every thing to do with air flow that we need for our Cappos.
Perforated mesh does not have a very big free area even though it may look so.
Put it this way you could liken it to a brick wall with a few gaps in it, whereis expanded metal and mesh have far greater air flow characteristics due to there more aerodynamic shapes.
Perforated metal is very deceiving, mainly due to its appearance as far as air flow is concerned.

As long as my capp doesn't boil over I should be ok I hope :) What about the original mesh is that good - maybe if you're bored one day you could do a comparison of mesh! (I have no idea how long it takes to set up something like that though!)

Boost Controller fitted now. Its a GIZZMO IBC (intelligent boost controoler) made in New Zealand.
Quite small, only about 24mm x 53mm x 125mm long. I selected this one due to the size and its characteristics. It can show BAR or PSI.
The rear part of the ash tray slide has to be cut out as the photo shows with the parts ready to assemble.

But does adding the breather change the sound much? I already have the pipe disconnected and just wondered if the filter makes much of a difference.

Finally got around to connecting the rising rate fuel pressure regulator over the weekend.
At standard fuel pressure it was starting to lean out around the 16 PSI mark but with the fuel regulator I took it up to about 18PSI with no problems.
Also upped the standard fuel pressure from 32 PSI to 40 PSI for better atomisation.

Yep, quite a big difference now in HP.
Should have mentioned that when setting up the fuel pressure regulator I raised the standard pressure (just to see what it would do) in steps until it was 45 to 46 PSI and it started to run rich. The fuel injectors hit their minimum duty cycle so I backed the pressure of to 40 PSI.

Been a bit slack lately on the web site as I have been on holidays but managed to spend a bit of time working a few things out on KOF33.

Done some interior mods which I will post when I've finished.

Thought I would work out the best position for an oil catch can. Heres the one I selected.

Relocated the radiator overflow bottle to where the anti polution canister was and fitted the oil catch can in its original position.

Fabricated a bracket that bolted on to the existing bracket on the cross member that holds the radiator hose.

Just got to run the lines now to connect it up.

Heres a photo from the passemger side.

Oh yeh the pastic bottle where the old air intake pipe was is for water/metho injection when I get around to it and yes there are a few bits zipped tied in but brackets will be made to suit.

I have only had to drill holes inside the doors so far for central locking.

If they made the stuff in Orange, that would do me, but tell me, what is the 'Rising rate Fuel Press. reg.' for...??? completely ignorant with this kind of stuff and what is the extra bottle for, with the Green cap...???

Posted by: grant4561 Posted on: Wednesday, April 30th, 2008, 12:28:35am
Reply: 65

The rising rate fuel pressure regulator allopws me to increase boost safely up to around 18 to 20 PSI if the standard turbo will handle that much. (Already tested it to 18 PSI and had more in it)
They come in different ratios with the one I fitted being 1:1.
What this means is that I can set a normal fuel pressure which I have increased slightly over the standard 32 PSI to 38 PSI and as the boost cuts in it increases the fuel pressure over standard at a rate of 1:1. Say standard fuel pressure is set at 38 PSi at 1 PSI boost it will be 32 +1 = 39, at 2 PSi boost it will be 40 PSi, etc.
This gives better atomisation by the injectors and will prevent high boost lean out conditions occuring.

The small container added with the green cap on it is for Water/Metho injection which I have not connected as yet. The black turbo hoses from the intercooler will be replaced and the injection nozzle assembley fitted in them when I get around to it. I figure the Cappo intercooled is only good at higher speeds when it can get reasonable airflow over it and not at lower speeds. The water/metho injection will overcome this and I might even flkick the intercooler once I am happy with how its going. Water/metho injection has a positive effect at any speed or air temperatures.

Sony 4 way 6 1/2 inch 4 way front speakers.
4 inch 2 way splits, kevlar speakers with silk dome tweeters in the the rear.
Found some Kenwood speaker enclosures at a second hand place and ripped the guts out and repainted them and fitted the kevlar speakers.

Mounted on brackets off the seat belt bolts behind the seats. Quite amazing sound for relatively standard speakers.

There are about seventeen different gauges you can pick from to display including speedo in km/hr. Up to seven can be displayed at once. This pick has three gauges up being MAP pressure, Air Fuel Ratio and Fuel Injector duty cycle in %.
The picture is pretty poor quality (got to practice more) as in reality it is extremely clear and easy to read. You could have a Cappuccino with a digital dash exept for fuel gauge and odometer.

Yes as I said above the picture does not do it justice. It is extremely clear and quite easy to read.
I set the dial colour to black first up and it was not as easy to read as the white. I probably will only have 2 gauges up at time though which will be more like having to 50mm gauges anyway.

Looking good Grant....don't be tempted to lower the rear, even though you did roll the lip as I did, you will find out when you go around corners with weight in the car, unless the springs are new, they will touch a bit....

Im definitely not going to lower the car as its hard enough to get a floor jack under it or put the front up on ramps now.

Last weekend I fitted a 3 bar map sensor to go with the new ECU and get ready for upgrading some (serious) boost, hopefully soon. Ally bracket with a new plug made from an old map sensor of a Vitara i found at a local wreckers. Cut the old map sensor apart soldered the new wires in and filled it with epoxy (aradite) to seal it so I didnt have to cut the original wiring harness and plugged it in.

For the new one it didnt really matter as with the new Adaptronic ECU I only had to change a couple of settings in the ECu file.
For the one I butchered to make a plug for the Cappo's wiring harness I just took the Cappo one over to a local Jap car wreckers and found one that matched. No charge either but I had to unbolt it myself.

Picked the roof panels up yesterday fram the panel shop after repair & repainting.
I know a few members have asked if they are double or single skin and whats under the lining, but I cant remeber which thread.
The centre panel is basically double skin.

All finished now with the carpet back in place. The hole where the jack bracket fits thorugh on in the right carpet had to have 2 slits cut in it to allow the brace bracket to fit.
The left side was fine.
Also found a new home for the jack, but I might find a better one yet.

Yes the roof panels fit in fine. I have even added extra padding in each bag to protect them as I have just repainted them. A piece of 6mm closed cell insulation used in the HVAC (Air Conditioning) industry.
It comes in a 1200x900mm sheet and is available in various thickneses but 6mm thick is all you need. You can cut the three pieces from one sheet and its quite cheap.

Havent updated things for a while as we have been working on the new cappo Little Green Devil.
Changed all the normal maintenace items, oils, filters etc, but had a persistant oil leak from around the turbo area but only with the motor running. Just a slight drip.
Finally removed the cat pipe and turbo and found it was missing one copper washer on the turbo oil feed line. All fixed now and good.
However we took the opportunity to decat it and make a new exhaust. Heres a pic of the new centre & mid section. Made in one piece with 2 inch pipe.

Fitted an ENZO leather/chrome steering wheel a couple of weeks ago.
No need for a boss kit I just redrilled the mounting points in the steering wheel to suit as its got a large enough centre boss.

Fitted a Wesfil panel air filter in the standard box which has lower pressure drop across it than the standard cappo air filter and drilled an extra drain hole at the lowest point in the bottom of the box. The standard drain hole in the filter box is not at the lowest point so would let water build up in there.

Good stuff with the knock sensor! Just wondering if there is any difference between a 'used' and new knock sensor? Also, who/where did you order the TPS from? ive been browsing around, but couldnt find anything compatible with the cappa :<

A bit off topic but I thought I ha d a miss at high revs so did all the normal checks plugs, leads, etc.
Took KOF33 down to a local really long straight bit of road in a sort of remore place and let her rip.
First of all I set the boost/fuel cuts at 9,500 rpm so I could see what she could do.
Didnt get into 5th. gear as someother cars appeared but I pulled the plug at 9,000 rpm in 4th. gear.
The speedo needle stops (it must hit some sort of stop) when its on the "h" in km/hr at somewhere near 7,500 to 8,000 rpm but the tacho keeps going up ;D
Estimated speed about 180 to 190.
Cant wait to get her into 5th.

according to google maps, it took me 1.5 km's to get to 8500 rpm in 5th :P

hit 120km/h at 300m mark and im guessing 170-80 at the 1 km mark... lol acceleration really slows down after 150ish.

When gettin close to the redline in fifth i cant even hear the engine no more lol... just crazy amounts of wind :P I also saw my mirrors start to bend in slightly lol

If you put in the gear ratio's in the adaptronic... could you use the Vidigauge as a speedo? Might be worth a look into as id really like to see what speeds we're actually getting :P

Yeah good Idea. I will set the vidigauge for KPH next time I try it, but better still if I plug in a laptop I can run a log file which will show the speed at what RPM on a excel file.
In the meantime I ran some figures through The Tamon Wheel calculator as you can enter your gearbox & final drive ratios and it calculates the speed.

@ 7,500 RPM 4th. gear 157 KPH and 5th. gear 199 KPH.
@ 8,500 RPM 4th. gear 178 KPH and 5th. gear 226 KPH.

I will try and keep this brief, but I thought I KILLED KOF33 on the weekend.

On Saturday the wife and I went for a drive up to a place called Rainbow Beach which is about
1 3/4 hours away to check out some camping grounds, etc. Great opportunity to put the Adaptronic in slow converge learning mode and get some tuning done.

KOF33 went like a train going up there and around town but when we left we got about 5km out and next thing started to miss then backfire, lost all power and luckily enough there was a little national park toilet stop car park I pulled into and she, gulp well..............................................died.

No amount of trying would get her to even crank over, thinking the worst (as I had made a lot of adjustments to the ECU during the week) I thought I had leaned her out or blown a head gasket or something. The wife insisted it was the battery, what would she know.

After a bit of neurological exercise and checking out the Vidigauge read outs I finally deduced that the battery had indeed simply shat itself. Some of the plates in it shorted out causing a massive current drain basically knocking out all power to the engine, car, etc. Hooray we found the problem, but what next :/ (Has a smoke) (Bloody wife was right)

OK get on he mobile and call a cab from Rainbow Beach so I can sort something out, but oh yeah there are no cabs in Rainbow Beach and as we discovered no phone signal 5km out of town. Hmmmmm has another :/

Another 30 minutes later a guy in a HUGE Toyota 4WD pulls in for a slash (about to my new best mate) and he had jumper leads and double batteries which OK got KOF33 to start but the second you disconnected them she would die.

A lift into town was next (with my new best mate) to get a new battery which I thought could be a bit of a task as being a Cappo they aren’t quite a normal battery. A couple of servos later and after a few phone calls I ended up getting the local battery guru to open up his shed and he actually had one.
So my new best mate drove me back out to KOF33 and oh yeah the wife (lucky she had the national park toilets nearby and surprisingly was in quite good spirits because she new it was the battery), fitted the new battery and bingo, all good :D

Until we got home, car went great coming back but I thought I had better check a couple of things and It looks like when the battery shat itself it fried something in the alternator. To late to check today its dark now and past beer time.

Sunday, checked all the fuses, etc and found nothing. Jacked KOF33 up, removed the under tray and started to wonder how to get the alternator out? A bit closer inspection found the wires going to it melted. A b*gger to fix but its all good now with no damage to the alternator.

Sugar time for a :/ and a (beer) after all of that.

Got the unanswerable question from the wife the other day "If someone came along when we were stuck and said 'your Cappo or your wife' which one would you give them?"
A bit like asking "Do I look fat in this outfit" or something.
I chose to be noncommital and still got in the poo ;D

Some spare nutserts in sheetmetal. I had to rivet a piece of sheetmetal with a nutsert in it to the inside of the rear plastic bumper bar on each side for the lower rear arche mountings. The nutserts just pull out of the plastic so they have to be fixed by another method.

Cheers Grant, pics look good, though I probably won't put on the Front ones as I don't want to mess with the Front Bar again....taking too long already. The Lower part on the Rear will get Pop-Riveted then 'Glassed to Bumper, Same as Lower part near Door will get 'Glassed to Sideskirt. Will post some pics when I have them attached.....

Got my 'tool and nuts' this week, wasted one to make sure it works.....Happy,

Now just need to finish the House Reno before the Final, and hope my Girls win their Soccer Semis this week end then the Final next weekend, then back to the Car.....Yippeeeeeeeeee !!!!!

It's easy to remove them if needed. Se link below.

I will have to get my finder out soon as I want to enter in the Classic Jap Show & Shine comp in Brisbane that's on in October but renovating the Camper Van is taking longer than I thought.( as usual)

Really happy with the flares but the bit I have mucked around most with is the black rubber strip between the flares and the body. The reason for this is mainly to form a seal so water wont penetrate.
Originally I planned to have a chrome strip but couldn't find anything suitable, then no strip at all like the others but decided to have the black strip. Doh does that make sense?

I think I have the same flares as you have on my one, I did find the fit to be so good so I skiped the sealing and by that i saved weight as I also did by using plastic rivits to fit them to the body.
Personaly I dont like the sealing, the flares looks less integrated thats why I dont have it.
Any plan for a front Spoiler?!

^ I guess the rubber sealing strip is up to your own personal taste. I like mine.
I did have plans to fit a front spoiler but I may not now.
I fitted the under engine stainless steel air scoop to make sure I got plenty of airflow for the radiator/motor as the mesh I fitted in the bumper is fairly fine. It get's up to 40 degrees in summer here.
The unexpected benifit from the under engine air scoop is it appears like it has increased the "ground effect" dramatically.
I will go for a few more drives on roads I know well to double check but it seems to have created a much larger negative pressure under the car and improved the handling.

OK I have decided to keep the red one stock and original and make KOF33 crazier.
I will start a new thread for the red one but first I need a name which is a bit of a debating point at home.

The family (wife) suggestions are as follows.

LAT33 (LATTE)
XPR20 (Expresso)
OND33 (Wifes nickname Ondree becomes Ondee)

The 33 (EE) is to keep it in the family with KOF33 (Coffee) and plates out here with 3 letters and 2 numbers cost heaps less ($ 440.00) than all letter ones which are over $ 2,000.00 AUD.

Whats the vote?
What do you guy's reckon?

While LAT33 has been getting all the attention lately it was time for a bit on KOF33.
So out with the front suspension and in with new stuff.

Removing the old suspension bushes with oxy and threaded rod.
They are a b*gger to get out but I found that if you heat the metal suspension arm with oxy you can push/pull the old bushes out with threaded rod and nuts without to much trouble.
If the bush starts to smoke its too hot so you have to cool it down again and restart.

How do you find the Suzuki Sport Coil overs? Im looking at options nowm but I dont want to go too low or too hard.

Thanks mate. Keep it up!

^ The rotor's are made by RDA Australia and are standard size but slotted.
Suzuki Sport have 3 types of coilovers and these are the top of the line set which are fully adjustable for damping and height.
I wont know how it drives for a while yet as I have a lot of other parts to fit first and KOF33 wont be on the road for another month or two.
I want to adjust the coilovers to lower the car about 20 to 25mm though.

Been pretty busy for the last few months with a holiday in China, ongoing home reno's and an exchange student from Germany arriving for a 3 month stay, so havent had much time to work on the Cappo's until now.
Here's a pic of the motor that will be going into KOF33.
Completely rebuilt with a port job, Various Suzuki Sport bits and pieces, stainless steel exhuast header ready to bolt a new upgraded turbo (RHB31FW) on.

Ok the motor is in and fitted.
Started basically first go after I cranked it with the fuel pump disconnected and plugs out to get the oil pressure up first.
Bummer though as the alternator is not charging even after I fitted new brushes and the dash light is on.
Oh well out comes the alternator:(

Not at those prices!
I have some spare alternator parts left over from when I had to repair/replace the green cappo's one.
Once I get it back out and see what's wrong I should be able to repair it.

All going well now running in the new motor. Up to about 650KM basically running stock boost. I will wait until I get about 1,000KM on it, change the oil and then should be able to up the boost a fair bit.

Anyway heres a new addition. Anyone recognise this?

Long weekend for the Queen's Birthday last weekend so I decided to knock up an under body brace.
I guess I have been spurred on by the guy's in the UK.
Due to the low ground clearance of KOF33 which is now about an inch lower than standard I decided agaist round or square bars and after consulting with son No.1 (Final year Mechanical Engineering & Aerospare) the decision was made to fabricate it from 30 x 3mm flat steel bar.
We figure that to brace the tunnel the best way was to use flat bar to stop any twisting forces.
Probably totally wrong but here it is on a temporary jig made useing galvanised bar tack welded together.

The galvanised steel bar is a b*stard to weld neatly but came up quite good after the final welds were cleaned and ground down.

The finished product was coated with cold galvanising zinc rich paint then a final coat or two of silver.
Why silver? Just because I had a spare can in the workshop.

Got a call from a guy in Brisbane that races a white cappo in hillclimbs who I met a few years ago.
As he races them he strips them right out so he decided to have a clear out and gave me all of the parts he had for nick's.
He wrote off one cappo a year or so ago and bought one from Melbourne and stripped it for racing.
Can anyone guess which cappo it was?

Yep some of the parts were from Capgun's cappo.

Well its finally happened, Blown Head Gasket :(
I guess thats what occurs when you are pushing the boost up around 1.3 to 1.4 bar. LOL
Anyone in OZ got one preferably a metal head gasket?
