When you look down the filler is there a restricter ,smaller diameter with a flap, just inside. This is so that narrow lead free pumps fit. It is possible that this has been dislodged and gone down towards the tank, if so this is what causes the back pressure.
You need something to pull it back up, the ariel will do, as when you push down the flap traps it. It is only an interferance fit not mechanical and it can be knocked loose.
Have a look.

When I fill up I always put the nozzle in upside down (handle on the top).
I think the nozzle then goes further down the hole & stops the pump cutting out all the time.

I used to pump upside down like Adam K until I got a feel for the engine and mileage now I leave the nozzle halfway in and watch for the fill line

I have never had any problems...only problems I have had has been the petrol station itself. Does it happen at every station you fill up at?
