Buying from Japan made easy!* *At least that's what I'll be aiming for
A little background info: YAJ is like eBay. Nothing more to say about it really.
Why this guide, you think? If you don't live in Japan you can't buy from YAJ. Technically you can register an account at YAJ and get to bid up to 5000 Yen (37,50 GBP). However, there are almost no sellers that will ship internationally. Paying for an item will be troublesome too as most don't use paypal either.
So unless you have friends or relatives in Japan you will need this guide.
The site that it's all about: Yahoo Auctions Japan
Once you're there you will see this:
I marked the (obvious) searchbar. Here you type in whatever it is you're looking for.
Because Japanese is not supported by this board I made up some direct links with different search options.
Suzuki Cappuccino Cappuccino Suzuki Sport Cappuccino
Other search options: EA11R F6A
--> Or click this LINK to go directly to a search query that I made that searches for "cappuccino". Difference from the other links: This will exclude all the cappuccino coffee machines and other stuff you're not looking for.
In addition, you can translate anything you want using a translator. I.e: when you're specifically looking for some headlights or a steering wheel.
Just copy what you translated in the searchbar and search!
If you have found something you like, click it and you'll see something similar to this:
I pointed out some usefull things to know about the auction.
Of course you can also copy the link and paste it in the translator of your choice. Google Translate Babelfish
This way everything will be translated in English and you'll be able to read it
Once you have found something you like you need a deputy service.
A few different deputy services: Celga Mail order Japan Masato world service Okshon Rinkya Shopping Mall Japan Crescent Shop
This is not a complete list, there are a lot more! These are just ones I found by using Google. Its worth looking around to compare fees and also find a service that you will feel comfortable with.
Things you should look at are: -Fees for deputy service -(Extra) handling fees -Packaging fees -Option to have a lower declared value on the package (=less customs cost) -Some deputy services charge extra for car parts. Don't know why but I wouldn't use one of those services.
But all these things can be learned when looking at the FAQ of the deputy service. (Do read those)
I use Crescent Shop. For the rest of the how-to I will use Crescent Shop as example.
Once logged in:
It's pretty straight forward. You can see I made a 100 USD deposit. This gives me a bidding limit of 50000 (375 GBP).
The rest I'm not going to explain as it quite self explanatory.
If I find an auction I want to follow, I click "Auction Search/Order" and put in the link of the auction. Then it's saved in my list and I can view or bid on it whenever I want.
This is one of the auctions I'm following:
Here's all the information I need. You can't see this but the remaining time is viewed in real-time. So you can wait until the last minutes/seconds and place a closing bid (this is called sniping).
If I want to bid I just click order and give the amount that I want to bid.
You'll also see a "Q & A" tab. If you have any questions for the seller you can ask them through the deputy service. Most services communicate in English pretty good. Anyway, questions answered can be viewed under the "Q & A" tab.
As I said before, I have only used Crescent Shop so far so I can't tell you much about the others. I can tell you about Crescent Shop (CS) though:
+ sides: Real time bidding - Not all services offer this (most don't) Deposit - CS multiplies the deposit by 5 (most need half or 100% of what you're bidding)
- sides: CS doesn't allow lower declared values on the shipped package
That concludes this how to on buying from YAJ Any tips or additions are welcome!

I can do the resizing. What size do you want? 800x600 or 640x480? |

Much easier for me to do it now it's posted as I can just resize the original files on the server |

Crescent-shop.com just changed to Noppin.com. They no longer require a deposit and you can now order over-sized items. Not limited to standard post length width weight etc. Nice changes! (though I'm not fond of their new search. you can't search for AZ-1 unless you remember to switch the drop down from translated -> original which is weird) |

Thats true. I however dont use them anymore. Their unwillingness to give up a lower value on the package for customs reasons got me to look for another deputy service.
I did still use them for saving auctions in the saved auction list, that was quite handy to have: all the auctions you wanted to keep an eye on in one list. |

PG6SA works really well though - in general searching by chasis type seems to work very well

Hi,
Ezra, I think you will find it difficult for a auction deputy service to provide you with a undervalue invoice. I find the Japanese people to be very honest and they consider dishonesty a very shameful thing to do or be accused of. I experienced it first hand on one transaction with Crescent shop, as I may have implied they were not telling the truth about a shipping cost. They replied with great sadness in their email and now only address me as sir not by my name.
I like their new website, it takes little while to navigate the site at first. I do not search Yahoo auctions via their site, I find their Yahoo categories confusing. I simply visit Yahoo auctions first, copy the auction page and paste in Crescent shop's Search by Auction URL or Auction ID option in the advanced search page.
Cheers Nick

Yeah they did that with me too. At that point I did think it was gonna be hard to find a deputy service that was willing to do this.
But I did find one! I can choose my own value and also wether to use the original packaging or that it should be repacked. And it's cheaper than crescent shop too |

Oh yeah its: http://www.goody-japan.com/
The website isn't as fancy as others and you can't bid real time. But I really like the service. The guy does a good job packaging the items. I've bought from him a couple of times now.
The skirts were all wrapped up in bubble plastic and put into a thick cardboard surrounding. |
