Watch the space below for pics to follow, but please read first.

For Crisp....and anyone else who wants to have a go at creating a Parcel Shelf Enclosure, but not limitting this to house Speakers, with an Imagination, you could turn out whatever you can think of.....storage compartment.....etc

If you are into any form of D.I.Y., then this technique can be used for anything.

That said, I cannot be held responsible for any damage YOU MAY CAUSE TO YOUR VEHICLE. if you follow this simple guide and are not TOO IMPATIENT, then you may well be surprised at just how clever you didn't think you were...makes sense to me...lol

anyway..........it's to late to start now but will give it a go tomorrow.

Please feel free to PM. me with any questions regarding this subject and I will try my best to give you a sensible answer...though it may depend on how much I've had to drink as to wether that happens...lol

First things first.......There is a BIT OF READING TO DO..........

Okay, Before I start.........PREPARATION IS MOST IMPORTANT. Clear your area of anything that will get in your way and isn't usefull...ESPECIALLY THE WIFE...LOL, as you will need to work relatively quickly and don't want to have an accident and cover yourself in fibreglass 'cos you will get HARD real fast....hmmmm, could be handy later,nudge,nudge,wink,wink........
If you are in a garage with a window, open it to get some ventilation.

Now I could go on to tell you about all the safety aspects of this, but COMMONSENSE should be with you. The resin is a 2 part thing...read the measuring amounts CAREFULLY...Then throw away the instuctions 'cos this is a feel it kind of thing. Mark lines on your containers so that you don't have to keep looking for the correct amounts ( once you get the hang of it, instinct takes over ). If you want to speed up the drying time, you can add a little more Catalyst than the prescibed dose...but be warned: IT WILL GET HOT and to much could EAT your container as happend to me, so, best container to use for mixing...Old Clean Coffee tin...Wife's Best Pyrex Glass Container... Shhhh....etc.

I have decided to do this with Panels out of the car......Saves me having to remove my Speaker Enclosure, but, if you do this in the car, YOU MUST COVER EVERYTHING WITH PLASTIC THAT WILL BE DAMAGED IF YOU DON'T!!!!!  .

This means, EVERYTHING......if you can remove your seats and Centre Console, Excellent, as this will give you more room to manouvre and generally make things easier. That said, you MUST cover the window and body panels across the tops.( Will post pics ). Just thought, I had spare panels so was easy...you will have to remove the Seat Belts from the top so you will have a Mounting point when finished.

This PREVENTION is necessary as I found out, to avoid the resin getting where it shouldn't....and believe me, you will have a mess if not careful. Cover the Carpets with Plastic ( I used Garbage Bags...The Green or Orange type ), 'cos if you get resin on the carpet, you won't get it off unless you Cut it out.
Don't be too worried if you get any FibreGlass on the Plastic Trims as it won't stick, but if you've covered over correctly, you won't have this problem.

Now I think we're ready......The weapons of choice

....And of course, the Container to mix it up.....Ah, Chinese Take away.....remember I said if it gets tooo hot, there is actually 2 here, as the 1st one was melting due to too much Catalyst.......The Tray, was a piece of A4 card, which is now, Plastic and Sharp, but as you can see, necessary to Catch the Drips....

Both sides obviously....I should point out at this moment, that, if you are attempting this in the car, you should apply Tape over the holes now, to stop the resin seaping through and fouling what lies beneath....

You must Tape the joins or the resin will seap in and make seperation difficult, not to mention having something you would have to grind off later...more work than you need.

Any tape will do as long as it sticks....if it doesn't, get some Wax/Grease remover, as I'm sure most are like myself and apply the polish when we clean our beasts...???, unfortunately, Tape won't stick, so needs to be cleaned.

Now, Books I've read, albeit for the pics, would have you cover the entire area to be 'Glassed in Masking Tape, then a layer of Alfoil, then a Wax/Release agent and that is fine if you are applying it to a Pourus surface, but as you will see, not needed here...

sorry to but into this but, I'd sugest wearing a face mask when cutting and handling the dry mat - like you say "Bloody stuff gets everywhere" (including your lungs). they haven't said it's carcinogenic yet (well i don't think so), but i can remember the days when it was 'safe' to cut up sheets of asbestos with a power saw!

For those considering using carbon instead of glass a recent study has shown that certain strand lengths of carbon fibre, particularly certain carbon nano-tube fibres, may have a similar effect in the lungs to some asbestos fibres so as fxdlidon says please bide much caution when working with any non-disolvable fibres.

Mix together then Paint some on to the area you want to work on first...I chose the Fiddly bits first, because They're a b*gger to do, as I found out from my 2nd Enclosure and given the way I have set this out....is a Lot easier than my other one.

Now there are 2 reasons for me Painting the resin on 1st....

1: It helps keep the piece in place as you are working it in
2: When you remove the Piece from the Parcel Shelf, you will have a reasonably smooth finish.....and I will talk about this a bit later. I am aware that there may be PROFESSIONALS Watching, so any HELPFUL Comments at the end would be welcomed

Push the piece into place and keep applying the resin until it is Saturated and see through. Don't worry about any creases and for God's sake, DON'T CUT ANYTHING....you will see why in a minute...

It doesn't matter how you apply the pieces, as long as they overlap each other....Small pieces for these sections....When applying the Resin, Paint it onto the piece all over until you see the Strands start to come away, then use a 'Dabbing' motion, so as not to move the pieces around and to remove any Air Bubbles-----VERY IMPORTANT !!!

Keep applying resin and fold as you go with the brush, sort of like a Bed Sheet...??? works for me, If this was Upholstery material, you would TRIM the excess.....Not with Fibreglass...you only need the scissors to cut your pieces to desired size....
